Having realized the mistake I made ten years ago (when I got rid of my original '79 Luv), I just purchased another '79 Luv that I drove back from New Mexico yesterday. Luckily, it made it all the way back to Arizona before giving me problems. So, here's what I need some help on:
- Any suggestions on where to get new weatherstripping for the doors?
look for universal stripping OEM parts are very scarse
- About an hour from my house, the truck started to rev up rather than idle whenever I put the clutch in. This morning, it didn't do it until I drove it around the block, then started again.
the stock carbs are very... well shitty. not much of a better description.
Now, about the time it started acting up last night, my fuel gage stopped working and my Generator light came on. Any chance these two things are related, or just coincidence? Meaning, could the revving engine be caused by an electrical gremlin or is it a mechanical issue with the carb and the gage issue is something else?
could be the carb "sticking" a bit? not being able to close smoothly and is causing it to rev? unless the choke decided to randomly kick on? my stock carb was doing all kinds of crazy things before i bought my weber. including back firing huge fireballs in my face.
- Thinking of buying one of the Weber 32/36 carb conversion kits - are there any issues with this carb and Arizona smog laws? Should I install this carb before registering the car?
There is a weber kit that passes California smog laws for 79 and older luvs if your worried about it. Look in the "offenhauser" intake manifold thread. the info is right near the end of the thread which is quite long. but the weber 32/36 really wakes up the stock motor, makes a huge difference over the stock one i love mine. if you need to do emissions at the time you register it i would find the street and CARB legal weber kit and swap it.
- What is the stock tire size for a '79 Luv? I have a feeling this truck has too small of tires on it. My buddy following me said my speedometer was registering about 8 mph more that what I was actually traveling at.
i believe the stock size is 195/75r14 at least thats what im running and have seen often. somewhere in that area. either way it should be bigger.
This is for a 1979 Luv, 2WD, stock carb.
Thanks for helping the newbie out.
