My friend just got this LUV for free, and the previous owner liked to take things apart and never put em back together. We put the head back on, and got the timing set etc. We put a new feul pump on it and rebuilt the carb. We got it to run, but it only runs on 3 cyl. We did a compression check, and the last cyl. is dead. We had oil in the cyl, and it didnt leak through, so we know the rings are good. Odds are it needs a valve job, right?

the best way to tell what the problem is would be to remove the rocker arms from that cylnder . Then put air into it and see where it leaks from . either the intake or the exhaust. that will tell you which valve is messed up or if it is the piston rings going into the crankcase..

Did you put a new head gasket on it when you put it back together? If you take the head off and do the same thing you did to check the rings...but dont use oil ..use gas or water ..pour into intake side and then exhaust side you can tell if its holding. If not it well leak and you can see then where your problem is if its in the head. When you did your compression test...what were they readings?

Make sure the valves are seated properly and not bent. Even if they look ok to the naked eye, it doesn't take much to make a leak.
