Anyone out there run into the problem of fuel fill nozzles kicking off after about 5 seconds of pump time? It doesn't happen at every pump station but enough to be annoying. If you have had that problem, how did you fix it.

I think some stations crank up the pressure to fill SUV's with 3'' inlets and 40 gallon tanks in 2 minutes. Not much you can do but try to dribble a little into your LUV and go elsewhere next time.

if you pull the pump out enough, and let it hang towards the tip of the nozzle, it should fill without clicking off. but then again, it also depends on the type of pump handle and if its anything like the ones here in utah, they don't have that safety spring attachment. those are awesome....

It is a known problem that Luvs have had forever, mine has done it since new, you just have to fill slowly.

I turn the nozzle upside down and use gravity to help me out. The self serve gas station attendants frown on this because it can spill out when it overfills since it dampens the effectiveness of the safety feature.

Yes upside down works, also I just insert the nozzle normally, and then lift up on it, and maybe pull it outward just a little. This sometimes works.

Wonder if a bigger vent would help? The inlet is fairly short, almost straight, and a fair sized hose. I am not anxious to mess with adding a new vent to the tank.

My vent hole was plug with a bug cocoon. Popped it out and is doing much better. Still slow but now i can put the pump on the lowest setting and it doesn't click off till it is full.

Yeah, it just kinda sucks since I live in Oregon and there is no self service. So I have to depend on a pump attendant to restart the pump when ever it goes off. Gets really annoying.

Oh that's right. I bet that's a pita. Tell them set it on the low setting because otherwise it will click off.

I have trouble filling my F250 with diesel. I think the tubes into the tanks are on too low of an angle. I have to hold the nozzle out just a bit the whole time, and can only set it at about half speed.

is there anything that could be done to solve the problem completely?
like a different fuel spout length and angle?? what is it that makes them click off like that? i dont have that problem at shell where i usually go but am/pm ALWAYS does it i always have to do it by hand there, the lock spots dont work there at all

I found that the upside down nozzle works great, but you get tired of telling the attendant (Oregon).

I found a solution by accident, when I was cruising a yard for parts. The truck I was looking at had the small metal reducer inside the fill tube removed; looks like the previous owner chiseled it out. I took that home & swapped it into my truck, and no more problem; works every time. It looks like a pretty nasty project though.

If you have emissions tests, like in Colorado, that will fail you every time. I just dont stick the nozzle all the way in and pump it on the slowest setting when I fill mine.

I can only imagine. Oregon. Can't pump your own gas? Can you pick out your grocerys? Or do you have some old government woman do that for you too? I put the handle upside down, no problem.

Here is some past discussion we had on this topic. I knew we had discussed this before and I posted my method and thoughts on it.
