My 90's Toyota had a small whine in 5th gear for over a year. My clutch was slipping and it was due time to replace it. On the way home climbing up a grade on the frwy my clutch started slipping and the whine got louder. Then
BOOM I was sitting on the side of the frwy waiting for a tow truck. I got it home and had a new clutch ready to install but had not made time for it. Got it all apart an noticed the clutch actually did not look broke, it was worn, but not bad. I check the rear end and sure enough the rear end was busted. Have your rear end check to see if that is were the noise is coming from.
