I have a '79 LUV. It stopped running a few days ago. The #1 spark plug has intermittent spark (Weak electrical). I bought a new coil, but that didn't fix it. It's getting plenty of gas. Anyone have a good suggestion? The starter gets plenty of power, the engine wants to run, but weak spark. Also, the inside of the brand new rotor cap has melting spots near where the spark hits it all four points. To describe it, it looks like the rotor sits high as it turns. Everything is new. :( :signanyone Any suggestions would help.

replace your points and your condensor... I had a set of points that just plain one end fell apart... took me nearly a week of spittin and sputterin till I fixed it... I just kept overlooking it

also I use to sling parts at oreilly's for a while in my younger years and sometimes you accidentaly get the wrong part slid over the counter to ya... check your part numbers then just call in and ask for the part numbers to make sure you got the right stuff... sounds to me as though the coil is just to hot though... do you still have the condensor hooked up even?

i just went through close to the same problem, mine would run fine for 10 minutes or so then run like garbage, or even die if i gave it ANY gas. turned out that it was either the points or condensor (replaced at the same time). i think the condensor would heat up, fail, then while it was running like garbage if i would give it gas it would die... duh cause with it failing it wasnt giving good spark, so pretty much any gas was "flooding" that tiny spark. you however mentioned that #1 cyl has the "intermittent" spark. is it a spurattic spark, or will it work for a certain amount of time then not for a certain amount of time? and if it's only one certain cylinder i would be looking more at the cap, wire, or the lobe for that speciffic cylinder on the dist shaft. if for some reason the lobe for cyl 1 isnt opening the points enough then it woould cause cyl 1 to have a weak spark and fuel could be flooding that "weak" spark giving you your intermittent firing.

LUV's have a weak link in the electrical system, the fusebox. The terminals the wires connect are riveted to the fuse holders. A little age and corrosion, and you get electrical intermittents. I solved mine by taking it apart and soldering the joints. Others have cleaned it with lemon juice, and others a new fuse box.
