so, i've been trying to figure out what exactly is happening with my engine.

i recently had a tune up done to the engine, and i had noticed that while driving, the rpms would randomly creep up and stay around 1300 or so until i revved the engine well above 4000 rpm. then it would come down to normal idle of about 900 or so.

at the moment, the rpm creep will happen at ALL times, and will not drop until i rev to 5000 rpm, and it doesnt always drop on the first try.

i was thinking it may be a choke problem, but then again, it could also be a vacuum leak. what do you guys think?

also,

what is the best way of converting from an electric choke, to a manual choke?

Have engine running and spray carb cleaner at the vacuum lines and the carb. If there is an RPM increase most likely you will find a vacuum leak.

did some looking and it seems that the choke plate isn't really opening the way it should. i checked the linkage, and while it moves just fine, it will catch and i have to rev to loosen. tried adding a manual choke to it tonight, but the bracket they supply in the kit is a joke. i guess a little bit of custom fab work is gonna get done to get that cable to move the linkage correctly.

on that same not, anyone know why the thermocoil choke would not push that choke plate open once warmed? it is getting power and it is indeed warmed(i pulled it after driving for some time after work tonight. if i can't get this stupid manual choke idea of mine to work, i will end up re-installing it.

I had to adjust my choke early last fall, the choke was not opening. I turned the adjustment all the way to lean just to see if it made a difference and then turned it incrementaley back toward rich until I liked it.

I am now having a manual choke issue on my hitachi, the plastic cap seems to pop off sometimes, can't seem to adjust the choke with any consistency. Fig, did you ever figure out your manual choke?
