Bought my first luv this evening about 45 minutes out of town. It's an all stock 79 4x4 gasser. It runs good, shifts smooth, up until about 55 to 60 mph when it acts like it kinda misses out and bongs down, then picks back up and drives fine. It will cruise at 50 all day without acting up but I managed to to stay around 55 mph all the way home. When i try to floor the gas pedal at anything over 55 it bogs down. Anyone no what this could be? It will sit and idle extremely smooth as well. I am a little concerned. Please give me some insight on my little beast

It may not be getting enough gas. How does it do if you try to accelerate going up hill at lower speeds? Could be a bad fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.

X2 Yes, change the fuel filters. Don't forget the one inside the stock fuel pump itself.

I drove it to work this morning, about a ten minute drive on the highway and it ran good and drove at 55-60 all the way here. What should my top speed on this thing be?

I don't think my 77 gas 2x4 would ever do more than about an indicated 80. Still will.

So I should at least go 70-75 or so...I haven't taken up any hills at low speeds yet but I did notice last night that going uphill at all made it miss/ bogg down obviously because it's going to have to work harder to keep speed...

I have had three, still have two. Mine seem to just scream up around 65-70, and that was on a rebuilt engine. It depends on tire size and rear end gears, but for the most part, these trucks were built to get good mileage when the speed limit was 55.
Other people on here have talked about how they hold it at 80-85 for 2 hour drives, but it seams they end up wondering why they blow head gaskets and blow engines.

A cheap tachometer installed in the truck will scare you into not doing 80 on the highway.

Thank you for the information. I am going to baby the heck outta my beautiful little LUV, don't plan on going much over 60 anyway, I was just concerned with the bogging down but driving around town and at not more than 60 on the highway it drives amazing. We had some snow and ice in the area so I had the LUV on the highway in 4x4 high doing fifty no problem (the streets were not bad at this point). Couldn't be happier with my $600 LUV!!! Now I just need to lift the little beast so I can put some bigger tires on. I am going to do some research on the site to find the easiest possible lift to fit 31x10.5x15 all terrains

With this truck stock driving into a 10 to 20 mph wind or having your tires down on air or oversized will kill your top end. So will having your points gapped too wide. Same with plugs. Driving with a ten to twenty mph wind at your back down a slight grade you may find yourself doing eighty, most I have ever seen is 75. By choice. One thing Ive noticed if full throttle isnt gaining you anything letting off the pedal a little to one half or three quarter may give you a bit more torque. Good luck.

as far as top speed is concerned...... just drive until the truck disintegrates and then write down the last known speed and you will know.

when i went to Los Angeles last year, i drove my 80 2wd down @ 55mph. (60 in some sections)

when i came back and found out i was geared a little lower, i drove at 50.

with the 2wd gears, and using 195/70-14's i was running the engine at about 2700 rpm doing 55.

now, with the taller 4.10 gears in the 4wd, i get 50mph at 3000 rpm. it's quite a difference. Of course, my speedo is 2mph too slow to read now that i have 205/75 14's on the truck...

just keep it at 60-65 MAX and you will be fine. i also concur with the aforementioned procurement of a very inexpensive tachometer. i have an extra one for you so long as you pay for shipping. consider it a "welcome to the club" gift.

(and just a few other suggestions, you may consider obtaining a voltmeter, and an oil pressure gauge as well. it really is nice to know what is happening underhood...)

Thanks for the offer fig! I appreciate the generosity! I am going to keep the LUV running at 55 tops so hopefully I won't be red lining her. If I get some time I will take you up on your offer for that tach!! Also I put a new fuel filter on the LUV tonight (the one right by the rear tire) but it still bogs down occasionally but it's only at speeds over 50 mph. Where is the fuel pump located on this thing? In the gas tank? There is a filter in the fuel pump? I have an in line fuel filter (one of those see through kinds) up by the carb. Previous owner must have added it. I think it is getting fuel, could it be a carb problem? I still have not checked spark plugs, waiting for it to warm up a little outside!! I am guessing those could very well be the problem but it idles great!! I dunno guys keep giving me your thoughts, I love talking about LUVS!

Sounds like it could be the accelerator pump in your carb being bad. I had the same problem on my LUV when I first got it. I ran 65 and 70 for the first few days I had it, after I got it used to being driven again, the truck had sat for a few years. But after those few days I started noticing it bogging. Ended up being the accelerator pump like I had suspected.

The factory fuel pump is located on the cross member underneath about the rear of the cab area. Its about the size of a pop can, the end turns off, and out pops a filter. You can also follow the fuel line right to it.
