ok guys, ive been doing alot of searching and reading about the delco 1 wire alt upgrade. since i want to install a number of accessories into the truck. namely, i want to go the electric fan route, and add off road lights.

it's time to DO THIS!

HOWEVER.......

from what i have been reading, there is some kind of wiring changed involved right? along with some brackets and such modifications.

So. since i'm a total idiot, i need some explanation as to how to do the following:

1.) select the right alternator
2.) mount said alternator
3.) wire into the existing harness
4.) modify any other loose ends.

from what i understand so far, once wired in, there has to be a wire change to handle the amperage load, and the fuse also has to be changed.

what am i missing? i know it's something important. also, would like to make this a definitive answer for those of us that want to also go the electric fan route. (sticky)

thanks guys...

i hillbilly rigged mine cause its temporary. 4 cylinder is comeing out and v8 going in but i had a friend take the up factory bracket flatten it and then cut me one an inch longer using it as template. moved the bracket to water pump bolt and mounted alt up side down. had to drill out hole that is normally adjuster scre to accept bolt to mount to factory lower bracket.lined up perfect. all i did was hook #2 terminal in alt back to battery post on back of alt and used hot wire from original wiring. charges 14.45 volts

like i said hillbilly rigged and temp. at that

There is some other wiring you need to do to make everything run right. Not sure about brackets and it makes sense to use larger wire from the battery and alternator. To stop the fule pump if the engine stalls, it is wired to the voltage regulator. There is a white/red wire that runs to the charge light and coil of the fuel pump relay. On the 6 wire plug from the VR white red = W = fuel pump and charge light, white = W = ignition, white blue = B = battery, black = E = earth, British for ground, white black = F = field, the stem of the Tee connector to the alternator, and white green = N, feeds back to the VR.

Most alternators or regulators provide some sort of a hot when working lead for the charge light. Just connect the white/red wire to it.

ok, so i just got off work, and now i have a 50 amp alt sitting on my seat in the truck. from what i can see, the wiring is the same for the 35 and 50 amp, but i did hear someone mention that a wire needs to be changed out for a larger one. is that right? i have a roll of 10 gauge wire and am eagerly awaiting some answers to do this tonight.

so.

Using a stock 50 amp alt, what is needed to make this work?
