I have a 79 chevy luv step side with a 1.8 motor, weber carb and header.added. I,ve rebuilt the motor a year and a half ago and have put 4 oil pan gaskets on it and now I'm on the 5th. The gaskets come from Fel-Pro and they split. I've checked the block and pan and there true and square and I don't over tighten the new bolts or nuts. Can anyone HELP me!

I don't have the torque spec's with me right now, (think it's 15 inch pounds), but be sure to use a torque wrench in "INCH" pounds and not "FOOT" pounds. Used the wrong wrench on mine and it's split because of it.

Take a ball peen hammer and "knock" back the bolt holes from the block side out. I also would use Permatex "The Right Stuff" and tighten the bolts to the correct torque. Over torqueing can cause the gasket to split. The Right Stuff is some of the best sealent I have found, I even recomended it to Catmandu and it worked for a problem he had come back a couple of times. It's not cheap but doing it several times isn't either.

I agree, the Right Stuff is awesome stuff.
The ball peen hammer is a good idea but on other car's I've never had luck fixing this issue once someone has overtightened the bolts.

Use two hammers. One behind the hole so you don't distort the lip. I don't think there is an oil pan out there that hasn't been over-torqued at least once!

'78 shop manual says "bolts and nuts- 43 in.lbs." It also requires sealant at the ends of the front & rear curved portions and at the crack between the block and the front cover.
