Hello all. Before you yell at me for yet another Fuel Pump post, please read on...

My fuel pump seems to stop pumping intermittently. I put a voltmeter on it, and it's getting power, and is drawing around 4.5a, little higher when it stops. It also gets hot. When it's running, the engine runs great.

1) is it shutting down b/c it's hot?
2) is it getting hot b/c it's not getting enough fuel through it? I replaced the external fuel filter and checked the filter in the pump. Hard to tell if the filter is dirty, it's just brown. If it's dirty, how can I clean it? OR, bonus points on how to find a new one.

IF I am better off just replacing the pump, which one should I get? I am in Phx, so have access to AutoZone, Pep Boys, Checker, etc. Saw a lot of posts that said "I just replaced the fuel pump and it runs great" Super, but what KIND? How much did it cost?

Also, anyone know of a parts yard that has some LUV stuff? Looking for door lock cylinder and seat.

Thanks!

Electrical problems are common in the LUV. Much of the problem is bad connections in the fuse box. I took mine apart and soldered the pieces together. I have also connected an LED into a circuit to see if something is losing power. You need a resister too, but I forget the value.

I went through several OEM style fuel pumps before the one time Parts America didn't have one in stock and the kid let me have some sort of an after market generic one. That was 5-10 years ago and no problems since.

You can get a pump of the same style at rockauto.com, or a generic at any parts strore. I have one from Autozone on mine, all I had to do was drill a new mounting hole through the frame rail.

Thanks for the replies.

No power interruption to the pump. Took pump filter out, still shuts down.

Will be getting new pump. WHAT KIND HAVE YOU USED THAT WORKED WELL? In particular, I need model#, price, etc.

Hello all,

Just a quick update. Got a fuel pump from Carquest. It's an E8016S. 2-4 PSI I believe. Guy said it's basically a re-branded Airtex. I was easy to install, just used the wires off my old pump and used the supplied crimps to do so. Only had to drill one hole for the mount (included) and it fits in the stock location. You'll want to have some extra fuel line and inline adaptors because you'll need to lengthen the lines so they don't kink, because the nipples are on each end.

Got it in, wouldn't start. Turns out I forgot to remove the vice grip keeping the fuel off my face during the r & r. DOH! After removal of that, it started, but would not idle. Turns out I had adjusted the float for the previous pumps' feeble output, so had to re-adjust. Unfortunately, it is now idling rough, even with the fuel in the center of the glass. It was running & idling great before, (when the pump ran) and still revs REALLY well. I tried carb cleaner, idle mix screw (does nothing), checked all vacuum lines, set timing, ect. Miraculously, it started idling well as I was giving up. Went to the closest gas station to get some air in the tires, ran as good as it did in 1983! But, idled like crap again when I started it up. Drove it home, and it was idling fine again. Anyway, I'll keep starting/running it every day to see what happens.

Thanks for the replies!

Change the fuel filters. When you install a new pump it has more pressure and stirs all the crap out of the bottom of the tank.

I changed the filter. Turns out that "anti-run-on" pin on the carb is sticking. I was cleaning the carb and poking around with a mirror to look at all the linkages to see if they were gummed up while it was running poorly. (It would idle if I turned the screw in enough), and ended up dropping my flashlight, and all of a sudden it ran great. I turned it off, then restarted, and sure enough, no idle, so I started rapping on stuff, and lo and behold, it was the body of that device that did the trick. (It's the thing that looks like a tall nut on the passenger side, toward the firewall.) So, hopefully with a couple of clean tanks of fuel, it'll work properly. If not, does it just unscrew? And can it be cleaned?

Yes it unscrews, and can be cleaned with carb.cleaner spay. There is a needle, and small spring inside.

What is your fuel pressure now with the new pump? Too much is not good....

The anti diesel solenoid comes off.Make sure to have a rag underneath it so you don't lose the spring! You can clean it with carb cleaner. Also make sure not to lose the seal!Do not use any abrasive because it will cause a bur and the needle will stick worse! I would use a good carb cleaner like Gumout or CRC, Carquest's brand used to be made by CRC.
Good Luck!

Thanks guys! I've been starting and driving it every day now for a week or so, and I think the pin is working itself free on it's own. Last couple of days, started and idled pretty normally.

I don't know what the fuel pressure is, as I don't have a suitable gauge. However, the fuel delivery seems good, as I've been able to get the float adjusted where the fuel is at the correct level in the float. I've got a bad muffler and am replacing that on Monday. I think I can better judge it's state of tune when that's done, but even now, it's running as well as it did when I got it in 83.
