 Post subject: truck dosent start

my 77 luv wolnt start ive put a cam in it lined the noches up on the cam to the head then tdc with the notch on the crank pully....i have spark and fuel....it shoots fire out of the carb what does this mean

It could be 180* out of time. Backfiring through the carb means an intake valve is open when the spark plug fires. I don't know if you can fix it by turning the distributor around or not.

my timing chain isnt in the right spot now i have to take the cover off which means the head the intake and exaust manifolds

I would recommend first getting it at tdc on the compression stroke then get all the marks to align.

Where everyone gets confused is this: The Luv camshaft is timed to TDC on #4 firing position not #1.
Line up the mark on the cam, then set the crankshaft pulley at 0 degree mark. Check that the distributor rotor is pointing to #4 in the cap. If not turn crank pully one more revolution and set at 0 again. This will time it correctly.

yeah i have had to pull every thing off to get to the chain
