Finally took the air conditioning and heater fan out to see if was the culprit causing the lack of cooled air when I first fired my '80 4X4 LUV up. It was easy to get out. It came out right over the gas pedal like I thought after disconnecting 2 wires and removing 3 mount screws. It's a neat little electrical motor with felt oiling pads for the bushings. The brushes were plenty long, but the communtator was worn half down. I'll live with that. Since it's a sealed unit, no holes for ventilation thru it, it was full of compacted brush and communtator dust. It's cleaned and oiled and back together and bench checked now. I'll try to install it tomorrow morning while it's still cool. I'm hopeful my problems are over. At least for a while.

I was going to suggest getting a price on a new motor but if it was that easy to remove, it really isn't that mandatory. Hopefully you dont have a dead contact on the commutator and it will work just fine and you'll get another 7 or 8 years out of it. But you might look at a price on a replacement cause they wont be any cheaper in the future. Let me know how it turns out.

Blue: forgot to mention last night that the commutator end bushing was practically dry. Got the fan installed this morning. It ran when I started the engine. Twice. Time will tell now if the culprit is fixed. See you're an aircraft mechanic. Small world. I'm a retired Air Force aircraft electrician. B-36's to FB-111's. I spent the Cuban missile crisis up the road a piece from you at Shepard AFB outside of Wichita Falls. But back on the subject. Schucks, a local chain store, says they can get me the fan motor for $38. I'm a little skeptical. Sounds a little cheap. Besides, the metal mounting flange is an integral part of the motor housing. It's spot welded on, so this makes for a weird setup.

Im Suprised that it cost only 38.00 . The flange should be Part of the assy. It was when i bought a new fan for my long gone Chevy Celebrity(talk about a reliable car!). It sounds like the problem is solved anyway.
