I just drained my transmission oil and about two and a quarter quarts came out. I put 2.7 pints of 10w40 back in and looked at my drain pan and thought that looks like a lot. Havent driven it yet what do you all think? 1980 4 speed 4x4 stock. Had to fill it through the gear shift hole the fill hole bolt was rounded off before I started.

Don't forget your transfer case is part of the transmission. Should take 5.2 pints.

OK Got the fill plug out with a pipe wrench. Put in two and a half quarts and it was running out the fill plug. Cant believe I forgot to look in the 4x4 section duh. Five pints in. The book says 2.7 pints for the transmission and 5.2 pints for the transfer case thats 7.9 total. Am I three pints low or do three pints hide in there someplace? The book also says use gear lube on one page and engine oil on another and on another page it says it should take 2.64 quarts to fill. Im calling it good and going for a drive.

If you fill till it runs out the fill hole that is the correct amount no mater what it says. I believe 2x4 models hold 2.7 pints but the 4x4 models hold 5.2 pints. The integrated transfer case takes the additional amount.

Just a tip, a 15/16'' wrench or socket is a good, tight fit on the transmission plugs. SAE wrenches still seem to be cheaper and easier to find than metric. Don't understand that with almost everything being metric now. I have been using a 6 point socket on my 77 2x4 since it was new.
