This probably is not news for the real veterans here, but since I did it the hard way for 20 years before I got smart,
I'll pass it along.
Don't use an open end wrench for that hard to get to top nut on the starter motor.
Use three extensions on a socket wrench and get at it from up under the intake manifold.
Turns a frustrating job into a 15 minute breeze.

Yes, I usually end up with the ratchet up near the radiator.

i use a deep socket, an 18" extention, a universal and an 8" extention and the ratchet right by my battery and makes it fairly easy to get on and off

Still not fun. I hope I don't go through what I did with the alternator. I had replaced them both 8-10 years old and both went bad recently. I had the receipts and Advanced Auto replaced them for free. After about a month, the alternator went bad again. They gave me another. It was bad out of the box. The third one has been OK for a couple of weeks.

i have had fun times like that... replaced the motor in my old F-100 with a great running used motor and three days later a rod starts knocking in it... always fun to have an older vehicle
