On my 80 4x4 Luv, there are two metal tubes (and third tube that goes to fuel pump). The two tubes have small section of hose that run to 2 lines, and then up to this unit in the bed. It seems riduclous that fuel has to run this course, though I know it's related to smog. I'm wondering if I cap off the tubes (or just run a hose from tube to tube) will this effect how the truck runs? How about when I go to smog it (in California).
Thanks!

Yes it will effect how the truck runs. It is the vapor recovery system and is related to the somg system. As a vapor recovery system it is a closed system, and if you cap it of it will vapor lock the tank as it is design to route the vapors to the intake manifold. So when the tank pressurizes the vapors go into the intake system at the air cleaner then when the tank cools off there is a vacume, and air is pulled back in to the tank. So you have to let you tank breathe.

As it is 30 yr's old I think it is smog exemet in calif. If not then this system has to be intact.

Thanks for the information on the vapor recovery system. I noticed between the two lines that they are different sizes. One is 1/4 inch and the other 3/8 inch. Just thought I'd mention in case someone needs to replaces the hoses on the tank.

Unfortunately California stopped it's rollever smog exempt year at 1975. Any vehicle 1976 or newer will continuted to be required to smog. Lame! Sometimes I think about getting a different year Luv because of it.
