So i finally got all the gaskets and parts to replace my cracked timing cover on my G180. I have a few questions. I know to put the #4 cylinder in firing position before i start. I plan on using the oil pump that came with my new timing cover. My question is, how do I make sure the oil pump groove is going to line up with the distributor to keep it in time. I cant really mark the position of the vacuum advance or the rotor on the old cover because i'm not using it again. Any suggestions would be great.

When you are ready to install the cover you start with making sure the punch mark is fashing the oil filter side of the cover. Then the center of the dowel pin on the pump shaft, and the alignment mark should line up.
At this point you can install the cover. You will then look in the hole for the Dic. and see that the pump shaft end split is parallel to the front of the engine with the offset beening forward something like this ( l). You will then be timed to #4 cly.

The factory service manual has a series of step by step pics. If you are going to do all of your own work it pays to hit E-Bay and get one.
