Hello!
I'm so happy I found this site!!
We have a 1977 LUV Mikado (hubby is original owner) that just got smogged for CA, and passed. We drove our beLUVed Mr. Blue home, no issues. When we went to start it a few days later, it starts well, but the engine dies as soon as the driver's foot lets off on the accelerator.
Any hints?

Thanks!
KP

My guess, and it's just a guess is check your coil or your points.

make sure the carb is getting fuel, and that it's at the proper level. Also, check to make sure that the mixture and idle screws have not moved out of adjustment.

does this only happen when it's cold? have you warmed it up and let it idle?

another thing to check is the rotor and cap. sometimes moisture can get under there and causes a mess of things.

But yeah, points and plugs may need to be changed.

And welcome! hope we can help in whatever way possible!

Thanks Ethelkilledfred!
Points are gapped properly, but once started it can't settle down from high revving (when after it warms up, tap the accelerator, it settles down to normal idle) because it just dies when the accelerator lets off.
Coil is original, it can be an issue!
Hey thanks!

Isn't there an electric idle solenoid on these carbs.? At any rate, check your fuses and also see that you have power to any solenoid on the carb. when the key is on.

2 circuits are different in start and run. Start bypasses the ballast resistor, the doflingy on the side of the coil. Should be 20-25 ohms between the terminals. The voltage regulator sends a voltage to the Charge light and the coil of the fuel pump relay when the engine is running. No voltage to the relay, and no gas. The engine wouldn't die until the float bowl gets too low.

Definitely with RonDog on the fuses. My truck would burn a fuse and refuse to idle just like you've described. The fuse that kept burning also turned off the instrument cluster, so make sure that's working also. I do believe that the GEN light also came on. Of course, if it is the problem as described above, the lack of charge production from the alternator turns off the fuel pump, so it should die even with your foot on the gas as soon as the bowl runs dry.

Yes the anti-diesel or run-on solenoid on the carb needs power all the time when the key is on. If not it will die at idle.

Thank you. That's the one I was trying to think of.
