heres the problem. i was driving home the other day and it died on me. it did not spouter, it just shut off. heres what its doing. No spark and not getting fuel. and when i crank it over the engine turns over real fast. heres what ive checked. coil is good, resister is good, timing chain is not broke. and it has compression but no sure how much, how much should the gauge read when i put the compression tester on there? just need to know what u guys think the problem could be? maybe jumped time? thanks alot, trying to get this old girl back on the road haha

I think the manual list compression for my '79 as 170 psi if I remember right. It's close to that anyway. That is listed as new or perfect. When you check it, the compression should be no more than 10% different from the highest to the lowest. Here is where some people differ in opinion. My sons Luv has compression between 130 and 121. That is kind of low but it is within 10% from highest to lowest. The truck runs fine, gets great mileage and has all the power he needs to do what he wants.

The worst sounding part is it spins over really fast and no fire. If it jumped time then you more than lilely have bent valves. The fast turning over sounds the worst..especially with all the ignition components in good working order. Have you checked the point gap or is it electronic ignition? 81 and 82 are electronic ignigion. There won't be any fuel if the truck isn't running. The fuel pump is energized when the key is in the start position, and when it starts and the key is in the run position the circuitry goes from the Generator to the Voltage Regulator to a relay on the fender to the fuel pump. At least that's how my '79 works. My '81 has been doctored from all this.

Check the fuse holder. I fought that problem for over 20 years before discovering bad connection in the fuse holder. The pieces are riveted together and corrode. Power doesn't make it from the incoming hot wire to the wire out. I soldered mine years ago and it runs better than ever.

Do a search here. Plenty of threads about it.

Last week mine lost power and stopped while zipping along at 70 mph. Once I got it towed home I found the distributor had turned throwing the timing out. I just forgot to tighten it affter getting it running recently.
Also, look at the fuel filter too by changing it out. Keep the old one and let it sit a day or two to dry out and then tap it on a hard surface to see if any crud comes out. Blocked/restricted fuel filters show evidence of the fuel lines and tank needing to be flushed.
Run a wire from the battery to the "+" side of the coil (bypass the resister if you have one) and see if you get spark. Just helps narrow down the problem.
Of course plenty help here on this site.

My LUV did the samething. My dist stopped turning, and it looks like my oil pump took a dump. It's been sitting and have not had time to work on it but I will get on it soon. Hope this helps, good luck finding the problem, and don't forget the search button, it can be your friend. It help me on a lot on other problems I had to figure out from buying a truck that sat to 10 years.

I had a distributor that broke the shaft once. It took me a while to figure it out. I had to crank it over with the cap off and then "oh sh!t!"

update: i tried running a wire from positive on the battery to the positive on the coil, still no spark. i switch coils from my other luv, no spark and switch distribertors, no spark. i pulled the cap off, the distriborter is turning. im getting power out of my coil down to the end off the coil wire but then i cant get power out of any of the plug wires when i crank it over. so some how im loosing power between the coil and the distribertor. i check the fuse panel everything is getting power. i dont know what else to check. please help.

If I understood you switched distributors? Only a few things left that could cause that: Points not opening and closing in both distributors? Wire post on distributors (both) shorted to the body? Make sure plastic insulating spacers are in place. Shorted condenser on both distributors?
Just some things to check.

Did you ever do a compression test? I ask because you said it was turning over real fast. If you have fire out of the coil to the distributor but nothing out of the spark plug wires, hmmmm, anything I can say would be a repeat of what egg said.

Oh yes I remember you said it turned over real fast, like too fast? This usually means a broken timing chain. Did you remove the valve cover to check? Distributor turning in this case means nothing as it is driven from the crankshaft.
Just wondering.

Even with a broken timing chain you should still get a spark. I agree with checking for a grounding somewhere.

Congrats! Sometimes the simplest things can be the headache. My problem is my tach says I'm spining around 10K rpm at 65 mph! 8O
