I just put Mobil 1 5W-30 in my '77. I have run Pennzoil YB in it most of its life, 5W-30 and 3 month intervals. The truck doesn't get a lot of miles, and mostly around town, with enough road trips to warm things up once in a while. It only has 144K on it, about 5000 miles in the last year. I put on a Pronto 4619 oil filter, made by Hastings. Biggest filter I have seen in a long time. I hope it isn't a piece of junk like the Purolator Classics I have been running. They only have about half the media they used to.

I am leaving the Pennzoil in the transmission for now. I hear synthetics are bad for syncros and besides, it leaks bad.

your cam is not rollerized.

it is still basicly a flat tappet.

I would NOT be running synthetic.

Synthetic is not designed for areas where high pressure lubricant is required, such as the rubbing motion between the cam and its follower. This is where the porblems will be. ZDDP is the chmical that was used in this application and the EPA mandated that these levels be severly reduced ( a conspiracy to slowly eliminate outdated engines) in order to meet the new enviromental regs.

choose wisely.... synthetic will kill our normal V8/V6 flat tappet cams in less than 3K miles.

The EPA mandated the removal of ZDDP from all oils, not just synthetics.

Why would the effect be any different because of synthetic or not?

I see there is a product called ZDDPlus but I haven't tried it. It will basically add $10 bucks to an oil change but I guess it's better than the alternative... :(

Did I mention how much I hate the EPA? :x

We had a good discussing once about all this.

I'm still sticking by my idea of running Valvoline or NAPA (which IS valvoline) oil and adding STP 4-Cylinder Oil Treatment (The red bottle, not the blue). Although I haven't done that yet, I'm still running Rotella which may or may not have a significant quantity of ZDDP.

your right, and I should have stated that! conventional no longer has the required amounts of ZDDP, but after talking with several engine builders and talking to one of the factory reps for ZDDP plus, they do not reccomend the additive on sythetic oil.
