so i just got my first luv with a blown head gasket but running for the killer price of 300 bucks. i am about to do the head gasket but figured to do all the smog junk first since i dont have a shop till sunday (friday today). i removed the pump and all the lines. all the egr garbage accept the crossover tube, but to my understanding in the chilton book it will no longer function. and the only vacume line i left was the dist advance and plugged all others. i have ram aired it (removed the stupid plate at the rad support) and blocked the heat riser after taking out all of the butterfly junk. i only left the pcv orfice thing. it is a 1980 4x4 with 114k on it. my question is what will i have to do with the stock setup to make it run right as i have heard that modifications are in order after the smog is removed. thanks in advanced :ewink

I did this to my truck and with everything pulled, removed or plugged, i only had to adjust my carb slightly and it ran great.

i left the tube around the back of the engine installed just because it is a pain to remove. Left egr valve in place, just unhook and plugged it. pulled the injection tubes from the head and plugged with pipe plugs after rethreading, and redid vacuum lines to leave only the one for the distributor

after i pluged mine I ended up scoring a head from a 2.0L isuzu without those smog ports or even mounting holes for some of that stuff. ended up pulling it off when i had to put the smog stuff back on

Best way to plug the EGR tube is to cut the tube, slip the tube pieces out of the screw-in fittings, thread the inside of the fitting with a 1/4" NPT pipe tap, install a 1/4" pipe plug with a little Teflon tape, screw the fittings back into the manifolds. The fittings take a 15/16" wrench- that's I think a 24mm.

Hey Bob, what year is your Luv? My guess is 75 or earlier. Damn CA smog laws. I wish they would have left the roll over year alone. Otherwise come this January, the 80 would be smog exempt.

Well, Tuolumne county isn't on the Bi-Annual smog laws, but I don't want to mess with things too much just in case we become included.
I envy all the guys living in states that don't require smog on the older vehicles...

yeah, the lack of smog or any other regs (sound, tires, etc.) is quite nice, till you try and travel. then you can get hassled. i got the head off and just got the head kit, will be putting it in tomorrow. i took the exaust side egr bung and jb welded it shut, the intake side i build a plate to replace the whole egr system. will make much more room. and allot easyer to remove in the future ( can you say offy :D ) the timing tensoner has a grove wore in it but i will replace the chain and tensoner in the spring if it will last. 15k on the moter and not a single cylender ridge. makes me very happy. unlike my '76 400sb. i coulda stood on those ridges

so its been said that only a small amount of tuning is involved in smog removal. well its all done. all the top end gaskets and all the smog stripped (even fabd a plate for the intake). she runs way better than a sain person can ask for at 300 bucks plus parts. a small hesitation on the bottom end is all. so what is there to do to get her ship shape. thanks

Smog isnt even required in Spokane Washington. I got a 1980 and i have smog on it and just to keep it stock i left the smog in it. Without it on will it run better?

i would imagine so just for the sake of having more vacume available and less parasitic power from not pushing the pump. i did it mainly for the reason of clearing up the engine compartment. which it did immencly. i never drove mine prior to the removal as i bought it with a blown head gasket and did it all at once. but i think it runs great without. just the ease of maintince and tune up is well worth it though

You only live once, but the tree huggers have many lies...er. I mean lives/$$$$$$$$$$$ Dont throw that smog crap in the trash. You may need it sooner than you think. The only thing I noticed by taking mine off was it no longer backfired out the exhaust when I was coasting. Rock on.
