hello all,
I recently purchased a 77 2wd luv. it had sat for 4 months before i bought it with a bad water pump. i replaced the water pump and it ran well for a trip to the dmv. when i was driving it to work the following morning i got 20 feet from my driveway and the engine cut out and i havent been able to start it since. what should i check first? i plan on checking spark, and gas flow from fuel pump. any thing else i should consider?

Last time my 77 did that it was a bitterly cold day and it made it clear to the far end of the block. I did some checking and discovered bad connections in the fuse box. I soldered over the riveted together pieces. That was at least 5 years ago. It has run better since then than it ever has except for the first year or 2 after it was new.

so i checked for spark, i have it, and i checked for gas coming into the carb, i have it. i havent tried soldered yet (labman how did you get the solder to stick to 30 year old oxidized copper?) the only thing i can think of now is that it is the carb itself. does anyone else have any suggestions?

If you pour a little gas down the carb and you have spark, you should at least get a sputter. How are the vuc. lines? Rotten?

Check the fuel filter! I just posted a pic of what mine looked like. My LUV would lose power and die. Would not start. Poped the filter out of the holder, whacked it a few times to dislodge the muck in it, and it would start. I was getting gas in the carb, but not enough!

Could be low fuel flow from a pump going bad(mine would pump, just not enough to run). Frame rail mounted electric- right? Run a jumper wire from the battery, see how strong the flow and if any heavy thumping that can be hard to hear while cranking. If you need a new pump Autozone has a similar generic that only requires a new mounting hole through the frame rail. If you've got good strong flow then look at the float level indicator at the front of the carb, see if there is fuel inside the float chamber. If it's dry then the float is likely stuck shut, a little pecking might free it.

I forget. I know I did a complete disassembly. Likely I put the pieces on the wire brush wheel.

so it turned out the carb float wasnt disengaging hence no fuel was getting into the carb! thanks for the help everyone. If this happens again is there a way to fix it without taking that darn carb off?

I have had a ton of problems with the float too. Mine is acessable from a plate on the front of the carb. I only need to take the air cleaner off and the 4 screws that hold the plate. PITA. I think I have put little plastic bits of tubing on the shaft to keep the float centered so it doesn't hang up in one position or the other.

There is a little brass sleave that holds the float on the shaft and keeps it centered and away from the sight glass cover, of course it may have been lost in a previous rebuild/disassembly, easy to miss.
