I'm new here by the way.

Okay. Well I just acquired a 77 Chevy Luv a few weeks ago. I noticed it would run a bit hot on the highway.. So, I flushed the radiator. Only to find that its completely rusty colored on the inside of the radiator and all the lines. After i flushed it.. The hose from the head to the heater core bursted after i drove it for a few minutes and it overheated. I replaced the hose and I'm still overheating. I have no overflow tank and no Fan shroud. I do however have an extra pull fan from a previous car i had. What should i do? The truck will peg out at the H mark on the highway as well unless i turn the truck off and start it back up while rolling. then the temps will start to go down a bit and stay there. It's also not steaming out or spraying out of the overflow line when running hot. all my water stays in the system... I'm all sorts of confused. Help me out guys.

Your Luv has a CLUTCH fan? Both of mine are solid fixed fans but they are '79 and '81 so maybe that's a difference in year. What can you guys see in the way of circulation of coolant? Get your vehicles up to running temp, put a rag or something over the radiator cap and sloooooowwwwwwwwwly open and remove the radiator cap. You should have a decent flow of coolant. You might have to get someone to give it some gas while you check but you should be able to notice coolant flow. If not, maybe a water pump is needed. My '81 kept running hot but it was spitting fluid out the overflow hose so I replaced the radiator cap and that fixed all my problems.

does it run how if you DON't run the AC?

The clutched fans came on trucks with A/C.

Kind of a silly question, but is the coolant a 50/50 mix, or is it pure coolant (didja put half water half green stuff)? The green stuff won't work by it's self. It's an electrolysis inhibitor/antifreeze, but it doesn't carry heat well.

Another one to check is the coolant temperature sensor. Get ahold of a thermometer and measure the temp of the heater hose going into the firewall (it has the hottest water going through it) with the heater control on "hot". If the engine is running at 180 deg. F when the temp gauge hits H, the sensor is busted. Also, if your truck is really getting pegged on the hot side of the temp. gauge, the heat coming off the engine when you open the hood should just about knock ya off your feet.

If you've replaced everything (it sounds like you have), get something other than the gauge on the dash tell you if it's hot or not. lol, like a second opinion...

BTW, the Coolant Temperature Sensor is on the underside of the intake manifold towards the front.

Good luck!

Are you sure your coolant temperature sensor isn't dead? Have you replaced that? Sounds like you've replaced everything else.

Yeah, water is definitely cheaper, but the combination of an aluminum head and an iron block bathed in just water makes a giant battery and causes your head to disintegrate and coat your block. (electrolysis)

Dogtrainer is making sense. Maybe it's your radiator cap. That would explain the boil-overs.

So true. We NEED to run antifreeze in our vehicles. Straight water for prolonged periods is bad for a vehicle, even the straight cast iron ones. Anit freeze also has anti-corrosive agents in it to help protect your engine.

If the seal on your radiator cap is cracked or the spring is starting to weaken to much then your coolant system won't maintain the required pressure. As your engine gets hot the spring can't hold pressure and lets out your coolant. Coolant system....Radiator, radiator cap, fan, water pump, radiator hoses, bypass hose, heater hoses, heater core, water pump, thermostat, coolant. Something else to check and this happened to my Luv once before. Make sure your radiator hoses aren't sucking themselves closed. Hope some of this helps.
