So here it is i have a 76' g180 luv i just got the head re-done carb rebuilt every thing hot diped and painted. After puting all the peices back together she runs like a champ no leaks the buddy that helped do some of the work pluged most of the vac. lines. it has....... 1. 150lb 2. 145lb 3. 145lb 4. 150lb, As far as compression go's i think thats ok, heres where my problem lies.. the truck runs great idles well and everything when i first start it up no matter the time in the day it smokes pritty good for the first two or three miles and then stops. Im not sure where to look other than the valve seals and the rings but because i have good compression i wouldnt think that the problem would be in the rings and the valve seals im kind of thinking those were replaced when the motor was out. Also the temp. dial on the dash that worked before, now doesn't work any more the gage is good because when the key is turned it rises and then falls not to climb after that at all im woundering where the hook up is on the motor for the temp. gage and how it works. Any help at all would be great shes my daily driver and needs a bit of help thanks so much!!!!!!!

Smoking for a few minutes after start up is nearly always bad valve seals. The oil puddles around the valve stems when the engine is stopped, then slowly runs down the valve stems onto the valves. Heat gauge problem is most likely a disconnected wire black/yellow. It is easy to miss underneath the intake manifold just forward of the carb. Kinda looks like a nail head sticking down and the connector slips on from the side.

when you say you got the head re done, do you mean to say that you had it rebuilt? if you took it to a shop to have it done, they should have changed out the valve seals when they did the work. if not, yes, valve seals will cause the smoke.

What colour is the smoke?
White is water
Blue is oil
Black is a rich mixture.
