my problem is the other night i was driving and the headlights went off i went home and the fuse was blown so i replaced the fuse but they still wont work all other signal and brake lights work. i was thinking it might be the switch is there any way to tell if its the switch

I thought by '79 they had switched from a headlight fuse to a thermal circuit breaker. Check the wiring diagrams on the home page to verify for your truck.

Good luck,

Yep, there is a circuit breaker up under the dash. If I recall correctly its kind of a little metal box thing half inch wide by an inch long and it sits amongst the bundle of wires on top of the steering column behind the speedo. Sounds like you have a short somewhere in the lights and the breaker won't reset itself.
