i just recently sent my carb out to a carb rebuild shop in florida (im in CA) and i can no longer get my truck to even start, it sounds like it wants to start and gets very very close, but it just wont start and the very few times i did get it to start i have no idea what i did to get it to start, it will rev super hi and then just put out and die and no matter how much gas i give it when it did start it wouldent make a difference, now i took the air filter off the top of the carb and watched the throttle plate on the inside just flutter like mad once it did start, i tried setting idle and air mixture but to no luck, they also didnt send me a set of instructions either on how to set the carb. the shop claims that they run it on an engine for "x" amount of hours before they ship it out, but i have my doubts about it being run.

We will need more info: What year LUV, stock carb or aftermarket, is the fuel pump working properly, fuel filters new or old, throttle linkages free and operable, when the accelerator linkage is pulled, does it squirt gas through the venturies (should see it in the carb with the air filter removed). These are just to get an idea where you stand with the problem. Let us know...

the carb is orig. that i had rebuilt in florida by some carb guys, its been doing ok lately, but i had to change fuel pump 3 times now fuel filter twice dist rotor dist cap wires plugs ign coil. but i think i need to drop tank and clean all the baffles out, i laso cant seem to get the idle right its either at 600 or teetering between 1000 and 1100 (i added an aftermarket sunpro tach curtisy of a friend) all the linkages and things work fairly well besides throttle cable being slightly sticky at times.

mytmouse is correct, you have a huge vacumn leak somewhere and I don't believe it is in the carburetor! Check all of your vacumn lines, especially the line going to the brake booster. Plug off each line and give it a try, it will be hit and miss but by the process of elimination you can track it down. Are you sure the gasket between the carb and intake is correct and not leaking?
Keep trying, and I'm sure others will be checking in with you too, that's what's so great about this site, there just isn't a problem that some else hasn't also had!!
Keep trying and good luck,
scjconv

I've been thinking about your problem and I have two suggestions, BUT these can be hazardous so be very careful! Do not have your face close to the carburetor at any time!!
First idea, Have someone start the engine while you use a folded cloth completely covering the carburetor, this will cut out all air entering the engine and if it starts, carefully slightly uncover the carb and see if it keeps running, BUT be careful of flashbacks, (fire)! By covering and partially uncovering the carb you may find you have a vacumn leak.
Second idea: Fill a small oil can with gasoline and very carefully squirt little spurts of gas into carb as it starts, runs. This may indicate a lack of fuel getting to the carb. If you can keep it running with these small squirts of gas, continue looking for vacumn leaks plus fuel delivery system.
AGAIN: Be very careful , watch for backfires and with the oil-gas can, don't let it spill or drop! And don't spill any gas on you or your clothes!
Good luck,
scjconv

this might sound like a stupid thing to check, but when you changed the plug wires, did you put them back in the right order? sometimes it will run, but runs like a pile of prarie bombs.

(i had recently and incorrectly crossed the number 3 and 2 cylinder wires on my wife's metro. it ran, but not very nicely)

There really aren't any stupid suggestions! Sometimes stupid things get overlooked though! I recently found a 69 Mustang 351 that had been running for years with the wrong fireing order! Someone had installed a 302 cam and had wired the firing order back to a 351 pattern! This causes two cylinders to fire incorrectly, rewired the correct way and bingo-no more backfire, missing, incredible increase in vacumn, and it had been that way for years!!!
Sometimes it just takes patience and determination to find the error.
Keep trying and people will keep sending in advice.
Good luck,
