They started putting them on LUV's in 76 like Karl said, but only on the California trucks. I use to go through hell trying to get my 78 emissioned in Colorado because mine didnt have a converter (and didnt need to). I got pretty good showing the mechanic where it said "Cailifornia Only" in their emissions book.

Earlier on, the question of a 4X4 engage light being Mikado or not was brought up. My '80 has the light, there below the fuel gauge, and it isn't a Mikado. Also, it has both the in bed and under bed spare tire mounts. Could be someone else adding on, but who knows. I could've swore that the tank on mine was 12 gallons, but maybe not so much now...
It's a Cali model, if that makes any difference...

1980 was the year the 4X4 light on the dash was used, Mikado or not. On the California model 4X4 the spare was put in the bed due the the cat being installed where the muffler was and the muffler being installed where the spare tire was. Also notice that on California 4X4 the exhaust exits the oppisite side of a regular LUV.

That's good to know. I replaced my bed on my 80 4x4 from a 2WD Donner. I was thinking, Damn the exhaust is going to come way to close to the tire. Just curious can someone post a picture of the 4x4 mount? I'm have a light bar in my truck. I'm thinking of making a braket and havint it welded to teh bar (near the floor of the bed).
Thanks!

the 4x4 mount was in the front center of the bed and allowed for the exhaust to be run where the sapre normally goes. it does exit on the drivers side.

i didint see it listed so.
did the LUV ever come with the 3.42 gears with the 4 speed trans or was this only a pup thing, with the N/A diesel.
they had MPG+ on the cab behind the door, just in case you run in to one, you can tell it just at a glance.
are all LUVs 3.73s or 4.11????
depending on 4+4 4+2 and manual, auto trans???
or are there gears that the LUV has, that the pup/trooper does not????

Got a couple of questions. What year did they start with Stepside beds?
Also if you had a 79/80 4x4 Chasis, would the ealier luvs (72-74) cab and bed bolt to the frame? I only ask, because I've thought about getting an earlier luv because of the smog laws in CA, and I want to keep it 4WD

:?: what about some of the exterior and interior packages? what about the Mikado ? My 79' Mikado 4x4 has original interior which consists of red / white checked bucket seats. 3 spoke steering wheel, and the glove box says mikado. On the outside (when I got the truck) it still had the 4x4 and stripes decals on the hood. What other factory paint schemes and interior du dads came along with the mikado 4x4??? :morning:

Bucket seats seem to have been fairly rear. But many LUVs were Mikados.

Ok then I guess we can say that the 1979 LUV was the first 4x4 w/ IFS to sell well in the US market

Subarus sold pretty well in 1978, offering IFS and 4x4. (my 78 wagon was a tank!)

:? An alloy cover in a 76 is unusual, i thought the non crossflow engines ended in 75.
