So, when I bought my 77 luv, the exhaust was in bad shape, which made it very loud. I have since put new exhaust pipe out of the manifold, and replaced the muffler. It does sound much better, but it does still run loud with a funny sound coming out of the engine. Sounds like a very fast ticking, almost like a playing card stuck in the the spokes of a bicycle that's going really fast. Is this a normal sound for this little engine? It is a gas engine.

If the ticking increases as you increase the throttle it might be valve adjustment.

Do you have a heat shield over the exhaust manifold??? I had that problem (a looonnng time ago) with my stock motor, the heat shield was cracked at one of the bolt holes and would vibrate like crazy against the exhaust manifold.

It doesn't really get louder as the rpm's increase, but the ticking becomes more, well, noticeable. It is obviously linked to the rpms. I'll look into the valve adjustment unless someone else has some ideas

I would say one of two things. Valve adjustment as above, or an exhaust manifold crack or leak where it joins the cylinder head. Sometimes on the bottom and hard to see. Look for a black or grey smuge near any joints.

Get about a three foot length of heater hose. Use it like a stethoscope. Put one end in your ear and the other end on the engine to isolate the noise.
