So I got the truck to start... But I can't keep it there...

76 bone stock

If I feather the throttle it will keep going, sputtering badly. It will backfire, rev up like it is wants to go and then sputter. Keeps cycling like that but if I stop pumping the throttle it just dies... I really don't understand!

And I know, I need a webber, but I can't afford one right now.

Any help will be appreciated!

Change your fuel filter, then remove the breather and have someone start it and rev it up to fairly high RPM,s. While they are holding the throttle down place your hands over the carb (for a second or two) and kind of flood it but don't completely kill it, pull your hands off before it dies. If there is some debris in the carb this can dislodge it until you can pull it apart and clean/rebuild it. I know this isn't a highly technical procedure but it might give you some idea of what's going on. You can also verify your choke isn't sticking. I will eventually buy a Weber but both of my Luvs still have the stock Hitachi carbs on them.

There's also a site gage on the side of it that you can look in and see if there is any trash in the carb.

Good luck.

When I first bought it I changed the fuel filter, and I cleaned the carb out with carb cleaner as best I could. Guess I will have to get the rebuild kit so I can just get it fully cleaned out.

One thing I thought of is I think the float is letting too much fuel into the bowl, would that cause this?

YES, to much fuel in the carb to the point that it is starting to flood but still getting enough air to keep running can cause backfires, black smoke out of the exhaust, sputtering and will kill the engine if it's to much fuel to air mixture. If you think this is the problem make sure you check your oil and actually give it a smell. If your oil is thin or you smell gas in it then you are definitely having a flooding problem. That would mean your carb is dumping more gas in the cylinders than it can burn.

Then I SHOULD be able to adjust the float, right?

Ok... Adjusted the float, now the fuel lines up almost perfect. set what I'm pretty sure is the air mixture screw in all the way, then out three turns.

Adjusted the other screw until it out just a touch of tension on the throttle cable.

Is that correct? Or am I screwing it all up?

I'm sure someone out here can tell you the "presets", (my manual is out in the shop) but once I get it close I adjust by the way it sounds, RPM's and how well it performs.... (taking the gas, gas mileage, accelaration)

All the wires coming off the carb are connected, but I am not certain they're in the right place. Which colors should be connected? I'll take a few pics after work, because there are three wires to connect to, but only 2 coming off the carb
