Alright i need some hgelp whith the oil that goes in the 4speed/4x4 tranny. Now its one piece and my 2 books tell me kinda diferent things. My owners manual says that the 4speed takes 80w and the transfercase takes 30w (now the tranny and transfer case use the same oil, its one piece). And my Haynes manual just says 30w. So what are you guys running and could you help whith this confusion.

I changed mine when I got it. You need standard grade 30w motor oil. I used castrol in mine. Don't use the 5w-30, 10w-30, etc. You need single 30w motor oil. I know it sounds wierd, but that's what you need.

I hope this helps you.

alright thanks guys, tomaow its done to schucks to pic up some 30w.
Also have any of you guys ever thought of adding that Lucas oil additive. It says its for motor oils and makes it so the oil coats better. I was thinking of putting some of that in there since my tranny has soo many miles on it.

I am puting it in my engine at the next oil change. It's due now. I haven't, however, thought about puting it in the tranny. They make stuff just for the tranny, but with us using motor oil in the tranny, the engine stuff may work. I just hope it doesn't make it too thick for the passages and such. I'd hate to see the tranny starved for oil. Maybe ask the parts guys what they think...

i dont think it will thiken it too much. My dad puit 90w in my tranny to make it last longer and i think it worked, 230,000miles later and its still tight. But ill still ask someone who might know.

well i looked at my 2wd and the fill and drain plug are in the exact same place as my 4x4s. So im perty shure that its just the one (the fill is at the tail of the tranny on the pass side and the drain is dead center at the front of the transfer case) could you confirm this?

Drain right on the bottom in the center of the transmission, toward the rear end of it. The fill is on the passenger side of the transmission, right where it is a pain to get at with the front drive line in place, but not impossible. Drain plugs on the t-case I've never really looked for too hard, I just change fluid often and run it for a while in 4HI with the hubs unlocked before I drain. I would say open anything you can get fluid out of.

I've had one LUV come with 90W in the trans and it didn't seem to suffer for it, but everything I've seen says 30W motor oil for the trans and tcase. Something I've been thinking about lately is whether or not to use non-detergent 30W. The stuff you get for standard motors is designed to hold junk in the oil so that the filter can catch it. Non-detergent oil is designed (whether intentional or not I don' tknow) more to drop the crud in the oil pan. In an older (like WAY older) motor without an oil filter you are better off with stuff stuck to the bottom of the pan than floating over and over through the engine. What I've been thinking is that the trans is more like an old school motor than a modern one in terms of lubrication. Problem is, you can't pull the pan on the trans to clean it out every so often.
