I found out today that I got a blown head gasket on my 1980 Chevy LUV (my only means of transportation to and from work). Repair/replacement of the head gasket by the garage that diagnosed the problem will be well over $1000, which is more than I paid for the truck and I don't have $1000. My question is:
Has anyone ever used any of the auto parts stores liquid "Head Gasket Repair" sealants that you pour into the radiator, and if so, which one works best?

I hate to be the bear of bad news, but headgasket sealer won't work for your problem. Usally when the gasket blows its because of 1 or 2 things. 1st thing is the head is warped or cracked between 2 cylinders. 2nd thing is that a piece of the head gaket is pushed/torn out of the way by compression & then it ends up getting burned in the combustion chamber. Sealer can't repair that. The best repair is to have the shop remove the head & have it checked by a local machine shop. Also tell the repair shop to clean out the egr passage inside the intake manifold & then check the egr valve for proper operation. That will help you get better fuel economy & lower the combustion temp which in turn extends engine life. Hope any of this helps. Keep us updated on what you find out. Remember $1000 is cheaper than making car payments & if you payed $1000 for a used car then it would need repairs. Damned if you do & damned if you don't.

$1000?? It shouldn't cost half (unless I am way out of touch now) of that for a shop to replace the head gasket, I got mine done for $150 but that was back in 1985. I hope they give you a free jar of vasoline with that estimate!! 8O
ps like mentioned, the pour in stuff does not work, just causes other problems.
pss where at in Denver?? I use to live there, cant think of any good shops down there right off hand.
