Is there a difference between a starter for the manual trannys and the autos?
The reason I ask is the starter that came in my 76 with an auto tranny seemed to grind and crank real slow.
So,I got another one from the local Pull and Save and it does the same thing.
The teeth on the flex plate are slightly worn, but not to the extent it would cause these symptoms.
I was wondering if there might be a difference in the nose cones on the auto starters that might possibly let the gear extend further out.
The starter I pulled at the wreckers was out of a manual, but they do have an auto truck with a starter in it.
Would like to know if there is a difference before I break down and buy a new one.

According to the NAPA website there is no difference. It doesn't require you to specify transmission when buying a starter.
