I have an '80 1.8L stock Isuzu and I need to know how to check and adjust the timing. I'm pretty much ignorant in this area, so a dummies description would be helpful. Actually, I could get my dad to help, he knows how, but I need to know what to adjust it to...
Thanks,
Caleb

I believe it's 8 degrees BTDC.

You need a timing light some people time it by ear but if this is your first time you need one hook it up to num one plug loosen the distributor and wile holding the light at the timing marke turn it left or right little by little untill you get it at the right spot all of this is wile the engine is running of course. Did I get it all every one?

Timing is 6 degrees BTDC engine idling at 900 rpm or less. #1 or #4 plug wire.

If you got the bucks....get a timing light AND a dwell meter. Once you have the dwell set--50 degrees, then set the timing. As others have said, 6-8 degrees before TDC will set up your engine perfectly. Then as the points wear down, and the engine begins to run rough, all you have to do is to reset the dwell at 50 degrees and the timing will be correct automatically. The dwell 50 degrees is the same as the point setting of 6-8 degrees. I use a remote starter switch permanantly hooked to the starter to allow me to make the settings. I've done this so many times I cannot count them. I've owned a LUV as a daily driver since 1985. I usually check my milage each time I fill up and when the MPGallon begins to fall off, I know it is time to reset the points. I can hop out, leave the ignition on, open the hood, connect the dwell meter, pull off the dizzy cap, pull the rotor and dust cover, stick a screwdriver in there, loosen the two screws holding the points plate [one just barely and the other a little more ], grab the remote starter switch, turn the engine over and watch the dwell meter needle stabilize, then adjust the points with the screwdriver until the needle centers on the 50 degree mark, carefully retighten the two screws, recheck the dwell to make sure I haven't moved the points plate[thus changing the dwell degrees], replace the cover and rotor, replace the dizzy cap, un hook the dwell meter, close the hood, and get on my way---in about 4 minutes. This is certainly lengthy in print but it really doesn't take much time and the more you do it, the faster you'll get. It's really easy and you can do it. Just go at it...Don.

Hey guys, haven't had a chance to work on it, probably won't get to it until tomorrow or saturday, but really, I don't know if that's the problem. If you haven't seen my other thread about my truck not working, please take the time to read it... It's an incredibly puzzling problem and I've been through the entire truck looking for a solution, any help would be appreciated. I have three luvs and I need two of them to be reliable by the end of the month. Here's the link: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=18688

I would welcome any calls: 541-337-2357
thanks, Caleb
