I've got an 80 model 2WD and recently it wouldn't start with the key. Nothing, no clicking,NADA. I can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver and it'll start just fine. So I head down the local arts store and buy a new starter and get it installed, and still have the same problems. I'm thinking it could be the neutral safety swithch or the ignition switch itself. New ignition switch is about $50, so before I spend any more bux is there a way to test the safety switch or bypass it altogether? Any help would be appreciated. I'm at the point where for $1500 I'd be selling this beast to someone. I've done a ton of work on it in the past year, new engine, tranny rebuilt, brakes, exhaust, tires wheels, etc...I'm just plain ol' tired of working on it.
Thanks
Tramp

Yes there is. If a manual transmission, it has a clutch switch at the clutch lever under the dash, if it is an automatic transmission the switch is on the transmission linkage. Both are checked the same way--disconnect the two wires from the switch and short them together. Carefull with the auto, as it will then start in any gear position.

Which BTW is a handy place to install a hidden toggle switch under your dash that only you know about. That way no one drives your truck without your permission. 8)

OK Folks. Thanks for the shout. I should have been more clear about what kind of tranny I have. It's an automatic, and I've found the neutral safety switch under the shifter cover. My plan of attack now is to try and find the wires I need to bypass the switch and try and remember always to make certain it is in park before I hit the switch. I'm more inclined to believe it is the safety switch instead of the ignition, but with these things, you can never tell for sure. I'd rather shave a bobcats butt with a butter knife in a phone booth than to deal with electrical gremlins. If this doesn't fix it I'll have to up my meds before I try something else.
