I have a 77 Chevy LUV, but I believe the engine is out of a 1980 LUV. Anyway, I had to take the cover that controls the choke off to solder a new clip onto it because the old one broke making the wire become disconnected all the time. After I put it back on, the LUV hasn't ran the same since when it's not up to running temperature. When it's cold a little black smoke comes from the exhaust and the engine dies when I give anymore than a little gas from idle.Plus, the exhaust smells a faintly of raw gas. But when it gets to running temp it's totally fine and runs good, no black smoke or gas smell. Did I just not adjust that cover correctly? If so, how do I do it, because my manual doesn't explain it very well. What I did was turn the cover so that when the choke is engaged there's just a sliver of space open for air to come in at an idle.

Make sure there is still 12 volts DC at the choke

Take off the choke cover and make sure that the metal tab on the choke plate connects with the square tab off the coil choke attached to the choke cover. Make sure as you put it together the tabs stay connected.

Screw down the choke cover so it can be turned clockwise and counter clockwise. Turn the cover and watch the choke plate, it will either not move or it will start to close. Keep going into the closing direction. Depress the throttle to to make these adjustments.

This is the tricky part with chokes, too much closing of the choke plate and the choke will stay on too long when warming up, not enough and the cold engine will die or sputter when the choke is not enough. Just keep track the position each time the choke is adjusted. Keep track of the little hash marks on the choke cover will help.

After the enging is warm the choke plate must be opened all the way, if not back off the choke in the other direction.

Make sure ya depress the throttle all the way to set the choke's high idle. The choke plate will snap closed when the engine is cold. The choke plate closing will make the high idle circuit happen when there is enough pressure from the choke setup.

The engine must be cold to make these adjustments so it may take a bit of time before its all good.
