Any electric fuel pump will fit any year Luv truck. There isn't any drastic difference in fuel pumps from 72 to 82. A generic aftermarket replacement pump will work as long as it provides enough pressure to feed the motor.

It is circulating fuel though your return line back to the tank. I'd have to think that the noise from an aftermarket pump is normal. Unless it's too loud. Then i would check the fuel line at the top of the tank of an air leak. If it's slightly cracked or split, it will suck air into the system which will cause it to make a loud knocking sound. This is kind of a unique situation but it happened to my truck a while back. I changed the pump and filter to fix a problem of a failed pump but i apparently cracked the old fuel line above the filter near the top of the tank. The new pump worked but it made a lot of noise. I assumed that this was normal and the truck worked again. It wasn't till i topped off the tank that i noticed the fuel line had a wet area on the line. So i decided to replace the lines at the tank to filter to pump. Once i done this, the noise was much more quiet but i could still hear it running. It is kind of a pain to change the line at the tank but if it's old, it should be replaced.
