Hey hey Im the new guy and Im doing some research for my buddy who just bought a Luv Truck and uh, he took it to the mechanic for a tune up and he said it has a blown head gasket, I wanna believe him because it billows BILLOWS puffy ass white smoke so its burning oil somewhere. Idk whats going on with the motor I just know forums are the best place to figure this sht out, all you guys have seen this before, whats going on here? Idk the year or motor name but it has a 4 cyl. Isuzu motor, that surprised the hell out of me.

its cool tho cause I drive a slammed Hardbody, im into mini-sht. I told my friend that whatever it was, we'd fix it.

The LUVs came with an Isuzu engine. They were built for Chevy by them. A blown headgasket is pretty common on them. Your best bet is to get a factory repair manual for the series truck it is. The Haynes and Clymer manuals don't really give enough details. The factory books are available in the classifieds section of this site, or feebay.

White smoke means steam, blue smoke means oil burning. Sounds like the head gasket is done though. Blowing tons of white smoke, runs like crap, probably has some history of overheating too. Search around in here and you will find MANY posts about blown head gaskets. In some cases the head will crack along with the blown head gasket, but you can't tell on that until you get it apart. The single best tip I can think of is to wire the timing chain to the cam sprocket so it can't move, then unbolt the sprocket from the head and leave it (the sprocket) with the block when you remove the head. This makes it so you don't have to worry about getting the cam timing back together right, because it won't move.

I kind of disagree with mytmouz on the Haynes service manual that you can find at most parts stores for the LUV. For a Haynes the LUV book is really pretty complete and would be a big help in getting started working on the truck. Of course a factory service manual is much better, but I wouldn't slam the Haynes or Clymer shop manuals.

Well, I bow to 800xl, if he likes the Haynes, then they must be good. He is the stock guru on here. All I do with the stockers is dump em. You will go far if you heed his advice...

In general Haynes manuals do suck, but I'm just saying the one they put together for the LUV doesn't suck near as much as the typical Haynes book. The one for my girlfriend's Saturn is working really well to level up my workbench out in the garage right now. :)

ok soo, whats the model number of these Isuzu motors? And good god I hope the block isnt cracked D: Mechanic dude said something about machining? Is this because the block might be warped from over heating? once i get the head off, will i be able to tell if its warped by looking at it or do I need a gauge of some sort?

lil_red, I have recently purchased my first LUV and then I bought a Haynes manual for it, if you buy one it will most likely cover a decade of years they were made. You will need to make sure you follow the procedures for the correct SERIES. 1972 is series 2, 1973 is series 3 and on and on. It took me a while to figure this out that mine is a 1979 so it's a series 9. It's all in the front of the manual right where I wasn't looking. The Haynes for the LUV is a pretty decent manual but I just got a shop manual from E-bay and I like it alot better. The Haynes for my 87 toyotanova has alot to be desired. Great in some areas and completely lacking in others.

A 72 is not a series 2, it is a series 1. It is a G-180 engine. If the Valve cover is flat (and usually black) it is a late model, if it is silver with a cover on the side and front it is a early model.

series 1 = 72
2 = 73
3 = 74
4 = 75
5 = 76
6 = 77
no series 7
8 = 78
9 = 79
10 = 80

most likely he was talking about the head being machined. it will warp or bow in extreme heat

Lil_red_again.....Luvrv8 is totally correct about the series #'s. My sincere apologies for the misinformation. :( Thanks Luvrv8.

ok so, the truck came with a spare motor in the bed, it looks to be exactly like the one in the engine bay so what Im gonna do and stop me if this isnt right, but Im gonna pull the head off the spare motor and have it checked out and possibly hot tanked and machined and all that and just put the fresh head on the old motor in the engine bay, does that sound right?

what Im wondering is, if the heads and blocks changed any throughout the years and series #'s, are all these parts interchangeable or??

Unless you like pulling the heads alot ALWAYS surface the head before installing it.
