Check your wiring to the carb and the pedals. There are switches on the clutch pedal, gas pedal, and trans for the coasting richer valve and the carb may also have a fuel cut off valve. If some of that was mixed up, the clutch pedal switch could be hitting the fuel cut valve.
The way coasting richer is supposed to work is clutch out, foot off the gas pedal, trans in 3rd or 4th and the valve on the carb opens.
It could also be a wiring fault on the clutch switch of some other kind too. If things were really screwy on the wiring it could be dropping voltage to the coil, killing the fuel pump, or just shorting something out. If the wiring gets bad in the harness it can do all sorts of things. My 79 shorted the reverse light power source to the main alternator hot wire and the end result was the truck would stay running with the key off. Strange wires crossed can make for strange behavior.
