Hi guys...I posted on the 23rd Sept. about the miss and the headlights. Well, in spite of re-grounding wires and general cleanup, I'm still getting a miss in my stock LUV. It seems to happen more at the RPM's around 55 to 65 MPH--yes, it still goes that fast! Get up to speed, starts missing, turn on headlights and miss goes away. Anybody new have any Ideas??? Thanks for your responses, Don.

Well, I'm not anybody new, but have you checked your voltage to the coil, and your alternator output voltage at lower rpm's? Have you checked what happens to alternator output voltage at higher rpm's when you switch on headlights?

Ya know, another thing: sometimes guys think they can't do the electrical troubleshooting 'cause they'd have to get a fancy digital voltmeter for two or three hundred bucks. However most hardware chain stores & building supply like Home Depot etc. carry some little cheapo voltmeters. They're small, maybe 3"x5" and 3/4" thick, analog type with needle movement instead of digital. These are just fine for 95% of automotive electrical trouble shooting and I've bought 3 or 4 for like $7-$10, keeping one in every glovebox.

Hi Jimmy D...Well I have to thank you for your advice. I finally tested the voltage at the coil and 'twas at 15v. So...when I turn on the lights the voltage goes down and puts less pressure on the coil. I think the coil was 'breaking down' somewhat by having too much voltage. I bought another regular and installed it but, for some reason, it didn't work at all!!! So, I drove 25 miles home on the battery alone(the charge light was on all the way) and I didn't have one single miss. Just purrred along. Now I'll have to correct the regulator problem but now I understand how the greater voltage was affecting the miss. Thanks again for your grasp fo the problem and your advice. Don

You should have a ballest resister for your coil, make sure it is there.
