I got a 80' luv. I was driving recently, the generator light came on and the truck died. I tried popstarting it but that didn't work so i figured it was an electrical issue. There was no spark coming from the plugs so i figured it was the Distributor coil. I ended up getting a new coil, cap, rotor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs to upgrade my older, worn down parts. In the end, the truck still wouldn't start. My battery is fine and i couldn't see any loose or unplugged wires anywhere. There is no spark coming from the coil so the problem has to be before the coil.

What do you guys think the problem might be? The last time i got my truck checked out i was informed i needed a new fuel pump eventually because is was missing a tooth but would that by chance have anything to do with the lack of spark to the distributor? maybe my wiring needs to be changed up?

Thanks guys, any info would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

ive had it happen before on a different truck and it turned out to be a fuse under the hood as mine was much newer i dont know if the luv had them under the hood also but any way check all the fuses as one would control the ignition hope this helps

There is a relay for the coil power(switching power). I am willing to bet you stop charging and one of two things happened. 1) when you do not charge on these trucks the fuel pump will not have power or 2) the voltage is low because the truck is not charging

I agree, make sure to check your fuses. It may not be the problem, but it's at least easy to eliminate the possiblity.

Hope egg chimes in on this.

I'd also check the ignition switch itself, they do go bad in these trucks. Since they tend to have 3lbs of stuff hanging from them, and the truck stopped while driving (hit a bump?), it just might be the culprit here...

Turn ignition switch on and check for battery voltage at coil + terminal to make sure it's getting power.

Also a blown ballast resistor can cause this problem as it is designed to reduce voltage once engine starts. Disconnect ballast end leads and check ballast terminals for continuity with ignition off.

Yup, when the alternator stops charging the fuel pump shuts down. Since the alt light came on first the problem is in that circuit. Check all the fuses first of course. Alternator itself could be bad or its drive belt broken.

so it turned out that all the fuses were good but one of the wires underneath the fuse holders had a bad connection. but i changed the sparkplugs and wires before i figured that out and had them in the wrong firing order. shows how easy it is to solve an issue and how easy it is to start another one! but the luv's back in motion
thanks for the suggestions!
