Anyone know which wires to connect to hot wire and keep running a 1976 luv? I have the ignition switch out and am trying to find another. This switch starts the truck but as soon as you get off the starter it dies. any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. TK

If you go to the info section of this board, you should find the schematic for your truck. In the schematic, there is a table telling which wires are connected when the ig. switch is in its various positions. You need to touch the wires in the second (momentary) position together, and keep the ones from the first on position wired together to keep it running. I hope this helps...

I have a toggle switch and a push button in lieu of an ignition switch on one of mine..

I'll go visit it this evening and let you know which ones are crossed tomorrow.

Kuranosuke & drummerforehire thanks. The picture was great, but I guess I have other issues. It still starts and then quits when I get off the starter. Any other suggestions? :?: :?:

There's two "ignition on" wires on the switch. One provides power while starting, the other is for the run position. Hook them both together. They are both black/yellow, or I think they are labeled "R" and "IG" on the switch. I'm not sure about the switch but I know they are the two black/yellow wires. In fact if you untape the harness back a little, they are both clamped together.

Yeah, one of the black/yellow wires is the fuel pump circuit. If you don't retain power to this, you'll lose fuel pressure thus killing the engine. I only wish I knew how to do stuff like that with pictures. I'm pretty much computer stupid  (but I am an electrician, so I hope I can make up for it  )...

CA do do you have points or electronic. If you have points there is a ballast resistor that keeps full voltage from going to points in run. This resistor is bypassed to help start the truck then it switches over to help keep points from overheating and burning. On my 75 it is under the coil on the fenderwell behind batt. If that resistor burns out it will do what you describe. You can run with out it for a little while but I would not do it on a permant basis.

If you you are referring to the coil shorting, I can see your point. But, when a resistor "burns out" this generally means that there is no longer a connection (it is an open circuit), and the truck will not have power after the resistor. This will not cause damage, but the truck shouldn't run as no power will be getting to the ignition coil.

Thanks everyone, for all your responses. I tried all the wire combos, but couldn't find one that worked( they looked right!) I bypassed that resistor on the coil and she fired right up and kept running!! Woo hoo!! Thanks again for everyones help. :D   :multi:

Once you get the truck running, disconnect that bypass or the ig. coil will overheat, and probably go bad. Believe me (from experience) it gets very hot. Your resistor bypass switch is not activating when you are starting it. That is why it is giving you fits...

I want to thank everyone again for all your help and suggestions. I picked up my"special order" ballast resistor yesterday afternoon and the truck runs great (well....maybe not great, but it will get me back and forth to work again.)
Speaking of work......do any of you so cal guys race out at LACR? My company, Meziere Enterprises, is sponsoring one of the races this saturday. It is either super gas or super street or super something.
After the racing is finished , we end the day with a free BBQ. All the racers are invited(and their families). Would love to meet any of you guys that make it there. I'll be the big guy cooking the chicken. Just c'mon up and say hi. Lot's of fun at LACR this weekend!! hope to see some of you there.
