I bought a '73 luv, and a few weeks after i bought it I blew the head gasket and cooked the head. As i was replacing the head a timing chaine guide broke so i replaced all 3 timing gears, the timing chaine a guides. Now the truck wont rev. over 3000 and it has rough idle. I pulled the spark plug wires one by oneand found almost no change in the idle when i pulled the #3 wire. I ran a compression check, and all cylinders were with in 3% of each other. I just cant fugure out what would be the cause of the rough idle and lack of power. Please HELP.

Check your firing order. If your cam is 180 deg off, #2 and #3 will fire opposite of each other.

I checked the timing markes and they are on, but one thing that i found wird is that when i went to get a new set of points, i had to get them for a '74 not a '73. I dont know if that has anything to do with the anything, but i thought that '73 and '74 were diffrent motors.

It's extremely easy to get the timing marks off because you turn the motor twice for each one time the cam rotates. In order to line everything up you need to align the cam, the crank, and the distributor.

With the crank at 0 degrees and the cam mark up, make sure the #4 cylinder is the one lined up to fire in the distributor.

Be CAREFUL because the Isuzu motors have interference valves. If you rotate the motor without rotating the cam and you have a valve open you will bang the piston into the valve.

I did wire the cap counterclockwise, I re-checked the timing markes, and the mark on the cam can eather be slightly advanced or slightley retarded, the marks will not line up perfectly, the timing marks on the crank and aux. shaft line up perfectly. If I were to rotate the timing chaine over one tooth it would make the cam a hair advanced.

72-75 engines are the same, but 72-73 had a dual point distributor and 74-75 had a single points type.
