My vin number is not recognized by anything. its only 14 digits. i've double, triple and quadruple checked the thing, and its correct with the DMV. But auto insurance places say it needs to be 17 digits. So what exactly am I missing here? I've got a 79 btw.

From this site, http://www.saabnet.ru/org/saab_vin.htm
Quote:
1981-1983 VIN Style

This marked the first year for the international 17 digit VIN code. It keeps all manufacturers on the same playing field, and you can identify make, model, and some equipment off of a VIN.

Funny to me that it's a Saab site, which is my other love (luv?)

Australia apparently didn't go to mandatory 17 digits until 1989...but you're in North America, right?

More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Id ... ion_Number

Anyway, your insurance agent needs some schooling. Anything pre 1981 may have less than 17 digits...(in North America) :ebiggrin

This reminds me of when I went to the DMV to try and register my truck. I knew it would be a chore when I had to surrender the out of state plates and ended up removing them in the parking lot, and they were held on with nylock nuts and I didn't have any tools, not in that truck anyway, all the tools were in my other truc. Fortunately the nice lady behind the counter loaned me a crescent wrench and a screwdriver. Anyway when I got to the verification step the conversation went like this:

DMV: "So what kind of truck is this?"
Me: "It's a Chevrolet LUV pickup."
DMV: I think it's Isuzu.
Me: Well yes, they were made by Isuzu for Chevrolet in the 70s.
DMV: Yes but everywhere it says Isuzu. It should be Isuzu.
Me: You're the boss, but I guarantee this is a Chevy...
[DMV examiner goes and gets another examiner for help]
Other DMV Examiner: Oh, another one of these? Just register it however you want. Just do what he wants. I'm so glad they quit making these things.

It wasn't as funny at the time, out in the parking lot debating in the 100 degree Glendale heat...

Although I will keep this possible VIN trouble in mind when I get around to calling AAA to add the truck to my policy.

Good luck to you!

When I recently changed insurance companies, it took several attempts to get it correct. The insurance card they sent me had Chevy LUV V6 Econoline van on it. Eventually they got it right but it was really a hassle.

So Now,

I have the thing insured and they took the VIN okay, but my insurance card just says it's a GMC with my VIN next to it. The guy had to put me on hold for like 5 minutes when I told him what kind it was, so he could get more information. He comes back and is like "it's a half ton, right?" That to me says he has no idea...aren't all LUVs half ton or less? Anyway I'm all legal now.

5 years later I reply! I worked in downtown portland for 5 years, parked my luv at Parkrose Sumner transit center almost every day. I should probably add, since I started this thread, that I got mine all legal'd up too, vin number wise.
