I'm still new to this site... I'm still new to the LUV in general so PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE as I am not a seasoned mechanic by any means.

Ok... with that in mind, I have recently acquired a 79 LUV 4x4. The previous owner bought it in 94 with the intention of fixing it. However he either didn't know what he was doing, or he didn't have the time to. The truck sat parked since the date he bought it. When I finally got the truck, the head and the valve cover and everything else above it (air filter, carb, etc...) was all removed and sitting either in the bed or in the cab. The stuff in the bed was all rusted and seized to hell (including the head and valves and all that crap :x ) I know basic to moderate things about how the engine works and all that stuff. (At least I think) But I recently just found out what an AIR PUMP and AIR INJECTOR look like and they are rusted solid.

Now here's my question: Do I need that stuff or am I better off without it? This truck will eventually travel with me to California in a few years when I move there so I don't want to remove too many emissions crap... or is that the way to go? I don't know, that's why I'm posting this ridiculously long question.

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated.

chunk the emmissions crap and plug off the holes coming out of the exhaust manifold.
it is not needed. When I got my luv all that stuff was already done for me.
your truck will run faster because of one less accessory and less weight! :D

I think the main question is concerning whether a 1979 is new enough in California to need the emmissions stuff. I personally don't know, but someone from Cali will surely have some info.

I know if you plan on driveing it in Texas, you well have to pass an emissions test.

The way i see it. You will have to get the smog fixed. If you keep it registered in Texas, you will need to pass a smog test because the truck is registered in the D,FW Metro area. If you register the truck in Cali you will need to get a smog test and depending on what county you register in will determine whether you have to smog test on a regular basis. The only way around this is to register the truck in Texas in a county that isn't smog test and keep coming back to Texas every year for a state inspection. It can be a real pain in the a$$. I bought my truck in Cali and i knew i would take it to Texas and i lived in a county that only required smog testing if the car was sold or being re-registered. I ripped out the smog and never looked back. The truck got its first V6 and eventually made it to Texas. Do some research on the county your moving to and find out if it's an agricultural county. If so, you can register the truck in Cali and dump the smog.

Thanks for all the replies!
But that's just more bad news for me I guess... I haven't done research on emissions testing in the county I'm moving to yet but I can already tell that it's going to be a pain in the arse... I'm moving to San Francisco (eek!) So I guess my next step would be to find a replacement air pump and so on and so forth... geez... and a cat. There really is no legal way around this. I want to try and keep the truck as close to stock as possible.

Whoa, you don't need a catalytic converter. These trucks were all Non-Catalyst. It's on the sticker under the hood.

You can always take the belt off the smog pump when you are not driving through the emissions test....

go ahead and take the smog off. they run much smoother.just take the air pump off and put a cap on the ait injection tube. just stash the parts somewhere and when it's time for emmisions put the stuff back on :D
