What I've got is not really so much of a problem just confusion I guess. My 79' started running really bad bout a week ago, it ended up being the dist cap. and when I was diagnosing the problem the first thing I checked were the plugs and wires. I pulled the wire on cylinder 1 and there is no spark, and it doesnt change the way the truck runs weather it's on or off. With the new cap the truck runs great, it'll do 75-80 no problem and get around 18mpg with 235/75's. It just seems that it should run worse with no fire on 1.

Any Ideas on how to remedy the problem, if it is a problem?

It sounds like the spark for #1 was arcing in the dist cap and causing it not to fire. With the new cap you say it runs fine. Does it have spark on cyl 1 with the new cap? And did you check the points when you did the cap?

It still has no spark with the new cap. I didn't check the points, they've been replace pretty recently, not that, that means anything. Could it maybe be a weak coil?

If the truck performs that good I would say you do have spark. Maybe just difficult to see it. Try this--pull #1 wire off the plug and then stick in another spark plug you have laying around, lay it against the block somewhere touching metel ( away from the carb) and fire it up. Easiest way to see.
