I just rebuilt mine because the I suspected the secondary wasn't kickin in. I was right, it was frozen up. After I rebuilt the carb I just looked down inside the #2 barrel and goosed it. It didn't move much but I could at least tell it was working. Just look straight down into the secondary barrel and gas it hard, you should be able to see it open. Be prepared to get blasted from your fan though.

Check the vacuum diaphram for the secondaries first.

It sounds like you may need to rebuild or replace. Rebuild kits are only about $20. Stalling could be a number of things. Mine was doin it before I did my carb but I also put in new points, plugs and condensor and reset the timing and checked the vacuum advance. Can you tell if your pump is working? Look inside barrel #1 and press accelerator (engine off), it should squirt a stream of gas. If not that could cause a stall. My carb kit didn't come with a secondary vacuum diaphram, luckily mine was still good. If yours is bad maybe someone else can help in finding one. good luck

The secondary kicks in when the vacuum pressure get great enough. The vacuum comes from inside the carb itself. There is a round pod just below the choke and toward the valve cover. This pod is where the vacuum diapram is. The linkage is underneath and you should be able to reach around and push up on it. I think you have to have the accelerator pushed down at the same time or it won't let it move. Mine wouldn't even move at all until I took it apart and cleaned it out.

One thing to consider is that you may have a different carb than me. I believe there may have been more than one model although I assumed a 79 would be the same as a 80. I can take some pics if you need.

I don't know about looking down in the carb and gasing it up because if it backfires, you might end up without eyebrows or more. Might be safer to use a mirror.

johnboy is exactly right, I should have known better than to suggest that you put your head over an open carb. Safety is a huge part of where I work and I should have been watching out better.

While we are on the subject-

On the vacuum secondary, I have my vacuum host hooked to what appears to be a vacuum fitting on the body of the carb itself, just under the secondary diaphragm housing. I didn't see any other vacuum sources in the area around the carb that the vacuum hose might reach, so I hooked it up there- Is that correct?

OK, I might be getting in over my head but I'll try. Mine has a vacuum hose that connects to a tube coming out below the secondary diaphram, but I think this hose goes to the dashpot between the secondary diaphram housing and the choke. I think the dashpot has something to do with California controls. :?: On mine the dashpot is not connected to anything. Someone else may be able to help with this one. Also, I believe the source of vacuum for the secondary comes from a port through the secondary diaphram housing (no hose). On mine the butterfly was frozen shut but the diaphram was just fine.

I hope this helps. I'm not an expert and, like most people on this site, I've learned from getting my hands dirty and digging in. If I have given any misleading information it was not intended.

If you find that you believe your carb is not working properly they can seam a bit complicated but a kit costs about $20 and a rebuilt from Autozone is about $270. It doesn't take long to do the math. If you attempt the rebuild and your not to confident then take pictures of the linkage before starting and once you start taking the top cover off don't turn the carb over as there are check valve balls. Just follow the diagram that comes with the kit.

You may be able to find a working used Hitachi (which should be what you have) for a lot cheaper online or from someone on this site or you may consider changing to a Weber. I don't have any experience with them but people on this site rave about them.

There are a couple of them. I'm going to attempt to paste a blow up of the carb. Maybe this will be helpfu.

You might try this exploded view picture. #56 is the little silver BB that falls out if you invert carb with the top off.
