Hello Fellow LUV :)wners,
I'm new as you probally figured out ALREADY W/ THIS INTRO
Anyway just purchased a 77 LUV, :D
which was under water for like 5 hrs up to the windshield
Also have 75 but hasn't been reg in while so parting out & swaping over for clean reg.
Anywayz connections HAD SIGNES OF CARROTION as i reworked the whole truck swapped new motor, new carb
swapped dash, fuse block most electrial parts swapped over and installed & check'd hook~ups & vacume lines went to start up & just turned over normal... has fuel & spark to plugs cap clean, wires gd, right wiring 1342, tested coil & resistor gd, check ign switch pulled cleaned fule tank ect... It did spit back thru the carb a few times but I belive my problem is w/ those famous hidden relays or V~regulator

I bought new volt reg, condesor, points on its way
But want wires correct before hooking them up

READ POST ON HERE FOR LIKE 3 DAYS.. l@@king for a clue to solve my problem YES got a manual (actual 3 different kinds)
Started chasing & checking wires pulled n cleaned some plugs AND NOW UPON replacing them w/ the wire diagram i'm not sure which way they mean to hold the plug while putting them back in for example: fuel pump relay
SEE PICS I'VE ENCLOSED
I put the wires in According to the wire diagram & it would NOT PLUG IN (ROUNDED SIDE) so i put the wires are in right order BUT the rounded side is on the other side
NOW The fuel pump doesn't cycle  so i'm running test w/ 12v test light
to see what has power and what is grounded

Is there anyway to check those relays?
WHAT should have 12V power when key is on? both sides of coil? resistor? wire to dist/dizzy?

THE MORE I LOOK AT THIS DIAGRAM THE MORE I FEEL LIKE I'M LOST

I want it right W/O ALL THE HACKING AND BYPASSING of items
I'll post this and follow up w/ results as we go

HOPING SOMEONE CAN HELP GUIDE ME SO I CAN SEE THIS WIRE DIAGRAM STRAIGHT
AND GET THIS LUV BACK ON THE ROAD

I've had 2 luvs before this and LUV'D THEM :ebiggrin
and beisde GAS IT STILL GOING UP here in the east bay north of San Fran.
Matt

PS:::from these pics can you see something wrong ?

I no longer have a stock truck, but I suffered through some of this same troubleshooting with my old '78. There is a post here somewhere by 'egg' on how the latching works on the bypass relay/fuel pump relay. It's one of those obscure sort of mentalities that makes sense when you REALLY study it, but it's not very intuitive. So, unfortunately I don't seem to remember how it works...ack...

I did have some problems with my ignition switch only outputting on one pole, thus not providing any voltage through a portion of the circuit. It sounds like you've already verified this, though. Not sure I understand about the 'rounded plug' portion of your post. The wiring doesn't care what the orientation is on the connector, if I understand what you've posted. Worst case, you can hardwire it temporarily to insure you've got it set up properly. Another option is to try to get together with another owner in your area and do some comparison checks with a DVM, on an operational truck.

I went out and got my stock 1980 Harness and here is what I see:

Fuel Pump Connector:

Rounded part as connected in your photo. Left Top = White w/Red Stripe. Right Top = Black w/White Stripe.
Left Bottom = Black w/Red Stripe, Middle Bottom = Black w/Yellow Stripe, Right Bottom = Black

Bypass Relay Connector:

Rounded part as connected in your photo. Left Top = Black, Right Top = Black w/White Stripe.
Left Bottom = Black w/Yellow Stripe, Right Bottom = Black w/Blue Stripe.

Again, this is a 1980 Harness (Minus the California Vacuum Relay), but this does not match your photo. The vacuum relay is independent from these other two, so I think moving this wiring will correct your problem, provided the relays are functional.

Your truck looks pretty darn good for being under water! It sounds like you are mighty close to having a nicely restored truck on your hands. 8)

Sorry I'm not more help, hope you get it sorted out.

1 thing leads to another but will be a nice truck when i'm done
.....I may be looking for another distributor on here as mine may be worn inside next to the break plate

I'll Update this later.... time for bed long day

Hope that info proves helpful... :ebiggrin

Electronic ignition upgrades are fairly inexpensive and pretty straight forward. Here's how it's done...

UPDATE
ok i rewire those 2 plugs for the relay but still NO fuel pump action

I compare your way to the wire diagram and it doesn't match the 77 or the 80 wiring diagram
but I'LL TRY anything AT THIS POINT
I still don't know if i did it wrong or if it was that way before i rec'd the truck.
NEXT TIME I DO WIRING I WILL HAVE DIAGRAM IN HAND 1ST

I rebult the distributor to remedy the wobbling breaker plate area i rotated the breaker plate clips to fill in the space thats worn to see if things would work seems like its tight and not wobbling inside now but will replace that dist. in the future
However,
I did put a little gas down the carb and it popped :) & semi~started several times using up the gas
so i'm making progress alotho when it ran outta gas the started kept tring

ANYONE OUT THERE W/ A RUNNING 77~78 WILLING TO TAKE A L@@K UNDER THEIR HOOD FOR ME

I could still use the relay plug details
I ALSO notice CARB PLUG does NOT match up to the wiring diagram either
nor do i have power to that plug(the carb) w/ key on
AND W/ KEY ON :
I HAVE 12V TO BOTH SIDE OF RESISTOR & +, - OF COIL & TO THE DISTRBUTOR
IS THIS RIGHT ???

I'll spend some time tonight going over the '77 diagram...

Hope I don't insult you, you've obviously got a lot of time in the wiring, but this might be helpful...
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/ignition-system.htm

Have you checked the grounds in the truck? Sometimes they are completely missing. The one from the battery tray to the block often seems to disappear...

I had a '70 Charger several years ago, and I ended up printing out about 12 copies of the wiring diagram and then highlighting each circuit. I lettered each set of drawings, (A, B, C, etc.) on each page and then wrote what the highlighting was for (which circuit). Takes a bit of time, but it worked well for me (on that car...), and I was able to isolate my problem(s).

With the key on you will have 12V at both coil terminals if the points happen to be open. If the engine stops with the points closed you will have 6-8V on + terminal and 0V on the -terminal.
I would think the wires in the relay plugs should have been right from the factory, unless you believe somebody messed with them. Your right, the best thing to do at this point is to have somebody with a running 77 look at theirs and write down all the colors and where they go.
