Alright well as most of you know, the headgasket blew again on my 79, so i've got the head at the shop being resurfaced, new stems/seals yadda yadda, and have a full head gasket fel pro set on the way along with new headbolts.

Just a quick question, i drained the block as much as i could along with draining the oil before i lifted the head off. well when i lifted it off, there was still some oil in it, and it tipped a little and some got down onto the block, and i think into the jackets that are there. is it bad if some oil got into it?

and also, there is still water in it and stuff so should i try my best to dry it out or what? will it f*** it up if i put it back together and still have moisture in the block.

thanks guys

Oil in your water jacket is not going to hurt anything at all. As a matter of fact if you put straight water in your radiator it is not only bad because of potential freezing, but antifreeze has lubricant in it FOR the water pump.

Second, water in the water jacket isn't going to hurt anything, either. Water in the crankcase is bad if you are going to let it stay there very long. The best way to get a condensation amount of water out of the engine is to start it up. If you can't get it out through the oil pan, then as long as you start it up soon you should be OK.

Oil in the water jacket isn't a problem, but you'll want to change the coolant after you're done. Otherwise, you'll start to see little clumps of 'chocolate milkshake' looking stuff in the radiator.

Water in the cylinders is a problem, because the cylinder walls will rust real quick. I recommend you sop all the water out, then spray the cylinder walls and pistons with WD40, or smear motor oil on them. This will keep them from rusting until you can get the head back on.

The last time I did mine, I changed the oil and filter before I started the truck, then started it, ran it for 2 minutes, and changed the oil again. For a few bucks worth of oil, I wasn't going to chance ruining my motor from some crud that got into the oil. I recommend you do the same.

yeah sounds good.

and yeah i soaked up all the water i could with some paper towels and wd-40'd it. so it should be good.

i totally forgot i sprayed that in there so i was kind of worried.

my head will be finished by tomorrow hopefully, but the gasket sets and bolts won't be here till sometime next week. :-(

what weight oil should i use? since its summer time whats the best type of stuff.

i just picked up the head today from the machine shop, last time we picked it up the cam and rocker stuff was already installed.

but its all apart now, so i'm gonna need some help on how I put all that back together, what torque settings for everything. i have my haynes book but its confusing.

so along with possible pictures and some wise words of the all knowing luv masters, i think i can accomplish this. :-)
