I have been looking over a lot of the threads about Petronix Ignitor and I am still confused on whether or not they have a kit for the '80? or if I can just use the one made for the '74-'75s and modify it? Any info helps!

I think pre 76 was a different engine.

If it fits an early I-mark or trooper with a G180Z or G200Z motor it should fit your 80 model.

I bought and modified the 1740 kit(74-75) for my 79.Works great.

Was also told, if you contact Pertronix and ask for these numbers, they will work for 78-80 with Nippondenso distributor.
18433 Reluctor Ring
16430 Module Kit

Thanks! One more question. Is the FlameThrower the best coil to use with this setup?

Awesome, thanks! Do you also have the part number for the right one?

Not handy, but I think the main requirement is for 12V neg ground system. Check ebay too, seen em there ocasionally.

I didn't buy the kit. They sold me two separate parts that were a direct fit into a stock dist. I posted the numbers in here somewhere. I'll go search for them.

Here you go.
18433 Reluctor Ring
16430 Module Kit
Just ask at a speed shop or whever sells Pertronix stuff. The module will fit the screw holes that the points used. Good luck.

Out of interest how much will those two bits cost??? Are they all you need to convert it???

Once its installed will it do the same job as is required for a Delco 808 efi setup???
They have like an external ring with a fixed coil in the centre and a module.
I need this type of setup to fit the 4cyl Delco TBI to my truck. Will save me a lot of work splicing the dizzy off the donor car into the G-series one.

I can't remember, but I would guess it was about $100-120.
The two bits is all that is needed although I then added newer plugs from for an '81 and gaped them to '81 specs.
This is just like the photo shows. It's a little elec. thingy about the size of the points, and screws down using the holes for the points. Then the ring fits tightly over the shaft that the rotor goes on. Then the rotor goes back on, on top.
I don't know anything about the Delco 808.

I have called Pertronix, and asked for the parts 18433 Reluctor Ring and 16430 Module Kit. They said they didn't have any, crappy deal :( . And I was wondering if JCWhitney is correct and that these can fit
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Prod ... 29/c-10101

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Prod ... 29/c-10101

If not I am going to go with the 1741 kit, I am in desperate need of something besides points....burned through 4 sets in a week and a half. 8O

Also I have found a few different Module kits at performanceparts.com that are for 4 cyl. nippondendo's and was wondering if they would also work.

If you can track down a stock electronic dist/ign module from an 81-82 Luv, or an 81-84 I mark or Pup with a G series engine (G180 or G200) - they all fit and it is a very simple 2 wire conversion. Some older ones have an exterier module mounted on the coil and some newer ones have the ignition module located in the distributor.

http://car-part.com/ is a great place to find that kind of stuff cheap. You can search by a part's price, how close the it is to you, it's quality, etc.

Plus Accel also makes a high output coil for a Luv that sells for about $40.00 US and I believe has the same output as the Pertronix FlameThrower coil.

If you are going through points a lot - sounds like your ballast resistor (that white creamic doo-hickey mounted on your coil) isn't doing it's job - since that's it's main purpose.

Replaced the resistor and then proceeded to burn the points in a half hour of driving... :(

You can also fit the internals out of the dizzy from an early FWD I-mark. Its pretty simple to do with a few basic mods.

I feel for ya bro, I had the same issue. Truck would go thru points like a kid with candy. Especialy after I did the usual tune up, had replaced plugs, points, condenser, coil, ballast resistor etc. It almost always seemed to happen on shutdown. The engine would do the dieseling dance like it wanted to shut down then when it finaly did, the key would be in the off possition, engine stopped then all I had to do was turn the key one notch to the right and bam it would fire right back up 8O

At one point the ensuing backfire cost me a muffler and damn near a carb.

Luckily there are a few options that have been listed here already based on where you are, you may have some luck finding a later model electronic dizzy to swap with. If not, those 2 options you listed from JC Whitney may work for ya. I would find out what the return policy is on electronic parts first.

And if you have to go with the 1741 kit, it will work, just depends on your ability and tools you have to do a couple mods. The ring itself is the easiest part and there are 2 different methods for snugging it up for a perfect fit. For the module itself, I drilled off the rivets that hold it to the base and measured and rechecked, then took a small bit of plate aluminium and made my own base using a rotozip and drill press. If you have to go the 1741 route, I could probably talk you through it.

If I do go with the 1741 kit, should I be worried about that fact that I can't find out why I am burning so many points? I would hate to waste money on it if I am just going to ruin it too.

I have another question, if I go with the kit plus the flamethrower coil or that accel one, will I still need to use the ballast resistor?

I use a balast resistor for my setup, truck had one already, so when I added an MSD 5200 I ordered the one MSD sell same ohm rating. Just in case.

If I remember correctly the instructions for the Pertronix gear and the MSD both stated if your system uses a ballast resistor, continue using it.

With any electronic setup you shouldnt need the resistor at all. Its only there to lower the voltage through the points to stop them burning out.

Is there excessive wear in your distributor??? Sounds to me like theres a bigger problem with the dizzy.

I still say the FWD I-mark gear is the go. You could get the whole lot from a wrecking/breaking.salvage yard for under $50.

Heres one version of a conversion. It uses FWD RB I-mark parts and parts from a Mitsibishi Sigma, not sure what you guys would call it. RWD Saturn and then later Astron motors.
http://www.ozgemini.com/forums/tech/viewtopic.php?t=4287

This one is the FWD RB I-mark and all its distributor internals into the RWD G-series housing. It goes into depth and talks about all sorts of other distributor related stuff too.
http://www.ozgemini.com/forums/tech/viewtopic.php?t=1651&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=distributor+electronic+conversion&start=0

Heres a thread about distributor advance and messing with it for turbo setups etc. I nothing else it give you a good look at the insides of the dizzy so you can see how to pull it down.
http://www.ozgemini.com/forums/tech/viewtopic.php?t=6346

I say for the money, go to a salvage yard and grab a fresh G-series distributor and one out of a FWD I-mark and take the pair home and start fiddling.
I used to work carting crushed cars in to a metal yard. Isuzus with HEI are generally pretty easy to remove the stuff from. The coil to distributor has seperate wiring. It has a twin wire plug in between the two. Remove the distributor, unbolt the coil and cut the two wires that go back into the wiring loom for the rest of the car and leave the distrubitor hooked to the coil.

Cheers, Bob
