My little engine runs so good but lately has started shaking pretty bad during cold starts. It will shake and run at high idle on the choke for about 3-5 minutes then will smooth out and just high idle at about 1500 rpm. I cant even drive it until it smooths out since it jerks the drivetrain to bad and I dont want to break something. It has also started to back fire when running cool until it warms up really good. Then I can even still get it to pop if I ramp up the rpm's in 3rd gear into forth unless I watch how easy I let of the gas pedal. Is this a valve problem, fuel problem, timing problem?

Just give it a major tune and see if that fixes it.

Plugs, wires, cap & rotor, points, filters (fuel air oil)
set the valve clerances and do a compression test when the plugs are out.
Set the timing.

See if that fixes it up.

Chances are pretty good that the carby is not too happy. The high idle thing would suggest that could be the issue as long as the timing etc is right.

The high idle is only while the chock is engaged.
