I have an 80 4x4 that began running rough, as though it had bad plugs or points. Changed the plugs (not too worn)and the points(they needed it) and now have no fire at the coil to the points or plugs. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the site, and the wonderful world of Luv electical gremlins. Here's a link to the wiring diagram for the 79/80...

There are lots of threads here on the site regarding this type of situation, you may find what you need by searching a bit.

There are two relays under a cover on the passenger side firewall, my guess is that one of them is sticking. They provide the fuel/ignition shut off in the event of an accident. I'm having an intermittent problem with my '78 cutting out and loading up and I'm fairly convinced it's due to the resistor bypass relay sticking. You can jumper it to try to get the truck started, so take a look at the wiring diagram.

Another quick place to check is the pedal activated switches that close the ignition circuit. There are a couple of these, and you can just jumper them together to bypass the switches. Here are a couple of recent threads on this...

Good luck, you can post photos after 5 posts. We all like to see the trucks that are out there on the road, so don't be shy...

I'm not the guru on electrical stuff, but keep asking questions and posting your progress and you'll get all the help you need.

Good luck :)

Check the contacts of the fuses. I had that problem intermittently and after cleaning all the fuse contacts, it's been running fine! And welcome to the club!
